Book Description

1 Dec 1997

Sarah Ban Breathnach believes that people are scaling down their expectations of what constitutes the good life. And they should be! A more slender purse doesn't mean we can't still live a rich, rewarding life. We can reclaim our futures by rediscovering what it is that truly makes us happy.

By providing a meditation for each day of the year, Sarah illuminates our journey of self-discovery and shows us that simplicity does not imply doing without - true simplicity illuminates our lives from within. She teaches us how to reorder our priorities. Carve out time for the personal pursuits that bring contentment. Savour the joy of simple pleasures. Restore serenity to daily endeavours. Delight in the everyday elegies of home and garden. Between the pages of this book, readers will learn how to nurture their own creativity, nourish their imaginations and celebrate their own styles. Not only does each day have a meditation, but Sarah has also found the perfect quotes, poems, reflections and excerpts from women's magazines and homemaking books from the late 19th century through to the 1950s which are featured throughout, giving the reader a unique scrapbook of hope and inspiration that is bound to become a treasured resource of ideas, advice and comfort.

Product Description

Amazon Review

This book features 366 essays penned from a woman's perspective. Sample topics include gratitude, harmony, self-nurturing, positive body image, the importance of scented linen closets, and many others. Each essay sports a pithy quote from (surprise!) the likes of Kahlil Gibran. Viewed uncritically, it's hard to argue with Simple Abundance's earnest admonitions to appreciate life, in all its messy imperfect excellence. And the fact that serenity and happiness are each in dreadfully short supply can excuse some of the treacly writing. But Breathnach sometimes lapses into what can only be described as her "Martha Stewart on Prozac" voice, and the results are aggravating to the extreme: "if you've been hesitant to strike up a reciprocal relationship with your guardian angel, don't be". (What on earth can you do for your guardian angel?) Being acid is so unattractive ... and shooting fish in a barrel besides. Read these feel-good essays every morning with the rising sun, a cup of mint tea, and a bluebird chirping on your windowsill, and you'll be happy

Before I began the quest to find my true self, I was a lost soul. Crippled by years of emotional abuse, often times self-inflicted, I realized that the only way to truly be happy in this life is to find my authentic self. Simple Abundance was given to me in May by the love of my life. He presented me with this book, a beautiful journal in which to write my innermost thoughts, and hand-picked purple flowers. From that day on, my life has not been the same. I began to read Simple Abundance. I wrote in my journal everyday. However, I stopped one day. The book laid dormant for months before I picked it up again. I haven't put it down since. I was inspired to read it from the first entry, to grasp fully the concepts which were foreign to me. I realized that when I received the book, I was not ready to delve into my soul just yet. Then, one rainy day, I summoned up the courage to begin digging beneath the surface, sweeping away the pain, anger, sadness, loneliness, desperation, self-loathing that plagued me for so long. I am still pursuing my authentic self. For me the journey continues. Ban Breathnach has taken the simplest of ideas and made them remarkable. What is so extraordinary is that the search, while exhausting mentally at times, can be accomplished by following her sage advice on a day-to-day basis. It is worth it to go through the extensive search. One's relationships with others can be dramatically improved just by improving the relationship with oneself. We spend 100% of our time with ourselves. If we don't love ourselves, how can others love us. I am 24. Alot of the entries deal with situations I have yet to encounter, but I am sure that when the time comes, I will be prepared by simply recalling the Simple Abundance philosophy. Read this book.... 5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book which lifts your spirits. 20 Dec 1999
By A Customer
Format:Paperback
Simple Abundance is a beautiful book, which can be dipped into at any time of the year. I received it as a birthday gift, and have since gone on to buy it for others. It puts the basics of life into focus, and makes you realise that life is as hard as you make it. There are many thoughts and ideas which guide you through the difficult times. It also makes you look at what is truly important in your life, and helps to dispense with the unimportant stuff. Simple Abundance opens your eyes to the simple beauty of life, which is to be found in family, friends and nature.

Simple Abundance is a sourcebook of how to get back to your "authetic self," the girl you were at 10 who had strong likes and dislikes, was not overly influenced by the opinions of others and had dreams for her future. The author, through daily "meditations" offers a path by which you can become more introspective and develop grace and serenity in your life. It deals with all kinds of areas of stress in our lives: our homes, our families, our appearances. She is tremendously revealing about herself, which is reassuring. She is also quite charming and offers plenty of food for thought. This book really can change your life if you are at the point where you are ready to get in control and allow yourself to be open to all of the richness already present in your world. By doing so, you can create the environment to which more abundance flows.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly does give Comfort and Joy ... 3 Aug 2004
Format:Hardcover
I have read Sarah Ban Breathnach's book thoroughly and return to it regularly. It is written as a "daybook" and offers gentle spiritual lessons and meditations. It is very subtle and gives suggestions and ideas without pushing them on the reader, and subsequently taking the reader through new and positive thought processes with each page, each page being just a fairly short and simple meditation for the day. When I first read the book I took great comfort in the fact that there were thousands like me quietly existing, and that one of us went on to spin this beautiful golden web of love and concern to an unknown audience. I actually passed my first copy of the book to someone dear to me who I felt at the time needed some words of comfort, and as the months went by I realised how much I missed the book, which I liked to pick up and read at random from time to time ... I looked in the bookshops for another copy to buy but could not find one anywhere ... so I gave up looking and resolved to live without it - the very next day I found a copy in the local charity shop - it was in pristine condition and unfortunately had been left unread. Fortunate for me, though, and I will always keep a copy with me. I am just going online now because another person I care for is showing signs of needing some spiritual comfort and, as she lives in another country, I cannot physically be there for her. I think the next best thing is to buy another copy of this book and send it to her. Thank you Sarah Ban Breathnach and I hope you read this review one day so that you can know that your book really did bring comfort and joy.

A very helpful book for those seeking a greater insight into themselves and the world. However, in places this book concentrates on the 'ideal American way of life' so can be a bit off-putting. Rather than sticking rigidly to the day to day structure of the book, I would suggest skipping the bits of homemade apple pie and lemonade on the porch and just extract what you find useful.
