Unfortunately, the minute the camera is off, the two are going at it hammer and tong. The sort of unassuming film that makes you smile. Its cynicism is countered by a playful innocence in its construction. Peter Finch and Kay Kendall great but look for an excellent performance from Muriel Pavlow-a wonderful actress who was much more than one of Mr. Rank's "English Roses".
This "behind the scenes" story plays off of the ego and self absorbing prevalent in show business. Finch as an actor whose ego constantly needs constant nourishment. Kendall as the jealous wife who must be the center of attention. Both characters are played over the top and the undercurrent of competition, relevant to today's dual career couples, is intense. Denham and Hird steal every scene they can as the success of the show begins to effect their egos.
Very funny and witty film brilliantly directed by the wonderful Muriel Box. Also, a very good historical look at early TV in Britain in the fifties.
A real effort to show how superior cinema was to the new medium?

This is a film that I remembered from when I was young and was delighted to find on DVD, after having searched for it for some years.
What I had forgotten was the cameo appearances by the minor celebrities of the time (something that would presumably be lost on audiences under the age of 60, but was amusing for me!)
In general, it's a cheerful romp; good fun on a rainy afternoon.
But what WERE the producers of the DVD thinking of when they approved the not-very-inspiring artwork?? I suppose it hardly matters now, but for those of us who remember the inimitable Kay Kendall, it was confusing to see Muriel Pavlow (who admittedly has almost as large a part in the film as Miss Kendall) portrayed on the cover as if she were the eponymous heroine!

A typical 'British' Comedy from the 50s. Peter Finch was a fine actor who had great comedy abilities.
