A Story of Love and Change

248 Pages - 80 Chapters

Silvix is the story of Erasmus Bach. It briefly tells of his early years in northern California and as a student at the University of California. It tells of his love and subsequent marriage to the beautiful elfin-like singer Nora, and of her death thirty years later to Parkinson’s disease.
Now past sixty, and despondent over Nora’s death, Erasmus’s entire life is abruptly changed when one evening a vessel from a far distant world lands in the glade behind his remote Carmel Valley home.
Upon investigating with his faithful cat, Gus, Erasmus’s weakened heart is fatally injured by the powerful sound of the vessels motive drive. Brought aboard the ship, Erasmus’s heart is replaced by an intervention by the brilliant alien surgeon, Santar.
There he meets Silvix, the tall, beautiful linguist from the far, distant world of Arethna. Although conversant in nine languages, her primary form of communication is expressed by the ever-changing colors of her beautiful, remarkable eyes.
The alien vessel has sustained serious damage prior to its landing. Together, Erasmus, now completely healed and made younger by the miracle of Arethnian science, sets out with Silvix to acquire materials needed for the vessels repair.
As they come to know and understand one another and their two very different worlds, they gradually overcome many personal obstacles and fall in love.
Although physically Silvix appears youthful, she is of advanced age and is slowly dying. With Erasmus’s help, Silvix, a devout agnostic, now seeks answers to the mysteries and spirituality of life.

Silvix contains robust characters, both alien and human. There are also many references to famous personalities and writers.
Although a novel that is serious in its intent, it also contains a good deal on humor. The conclusion of Silvix will come as a surprise to many, and is certain to cause the reader to think…

I hope you will enjoy Silvix.

5.0 out of 5 stars Silvix 17 May 2014

I have read this book and really enjoyed it. Shaffer writes in a clear, fast paced style and the story is inventive and moves quickly. Silvix is science fiction, but it's also drama and psychological self-discovery. A great read.
5.0 out of 5 stars A romantic sci-fi, and a science fictional romance! 3 Jun 2014

Format:Kindle Edition
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. A very interesting potpourri of religion, romance, space travel, and most importantly, cats! I especially like the ending of this book. Shaffer's book is the love child of Philip K. Dick and Oscar Wilde. A must read!

I really enjoyed this book. Although science fiction, as I continued to read, my thoughts were this could actually happen. The characters are interesting and believable. This is a great summer read.
