The author takes you through all the basic techniques of silversmithing, plus there is a sizable chapter on the design process. This is not really a book specifically for jewelery makers, so don't expect to read about stone setting or anything like that, but of course it does tell you how to shape and form metals so it is still useful for the jewelery maker.
There are some nice colour and black and white photos of various pieces done by different silversmiths to give you some inspiration. It would be nice if the book provided some specific projects to work on, but I think this goes agaisnt the ethos of the book, which aims to give you a general overview of technique so that you can make your own original work.
I think the book is not completely ideal for the beginner, as the author doesn't always fully explain how the tools work or what they look like, so you may find yourself doing some additional reading elsewhere. The book could also do with some additional line drawings to illustrate the techniques he writes about for us visually focused learners. Overall though the book is well worth buying if you wish to get into silversmithing.
