2.0 out of 5 stars A cheap measuring tape. 28 July 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase
I use these measuring tapes for underwater surveying. A pretty harsh environment for most equipment, and especially so for something not designed for underwater use.

My other tape (made by Draper) has survived many years of abuse, was left in the sea for several months, etc. But it is only 30 metres long and I needed a longer one.

The Silverline MT47 has now been used 6 times, in clean fresh water, and left to dry after use. The metal parts are badly rusted already, so take care if you need to work in the rain.

The whole frame is very flimsy. If you hold the handle, the body twists. The handle is a separate piece, and is attached with 4 small screws through thin plastic. (My old Draper was moulded in one piece).

If you hold the body, then it takes very little pressure to pinch the tape and prevent it running out. Sometimes you have to hold it by something other than the handle to be able to both position the tape and see the numbers.

The tape frequently gets twisted when winding it in. The guide rollers seem to be quite far apart - maybe they should be closer together.

The winder-handle is very flimsy. When winding in, it bashes on the body - i.e. every quarter-turn. When you have 100m of tape to wind in, that's about 1000 bashes.

Also, the winder-handle could really do with being an inch shorter. In the "closed" position, it can make a full rotation, meaning that over 2 feet of tape can get dragged out before the winder-handle hits the main handle. If it was shorter, it would only make a quarter-turn, and you'd only get 6 inches of tape to drag/snag.

The material of tape itself is fine. I need to apply quite a bit of tension to the tape to prevent it drooping (I'm typically measuring 50-100 metre distances, through mid-water), and there is no perceptable stretch to it.

I don't expect it to last the year, and am giving it two stars because

(a) At ten pounds, it is very cheap - almost a disposable item.
(b) I'm giving it a lot of abuse.
(c) I'm using it in an environment for which is was not designed.
