At less than £15 you can't expect a miracle solution. I'm no fencing expert, but over the last five years I've put in about 2 miles of fencing and have used a variety of tools. I'd seen the powered augers and this seemed a reasonable idea so I bought it to give it a go.

I've found it reasonably solid (I've not had any issues with the quality of the build), but agree with the comments that it's designed for loose soil. We have about 18 inches of soil (which it goes through without too much difficulty) before you hit chalk (and you may as well put the tool away), but with the odd flint (again take the tool out and get the flint out manually).

What I have found the tool to be great for is:

+ starting a hole before moving to a post driver (a bit like pre-drilling a hole for a screw)
+ removing the loose soil from a tight hole (simply loosen the soil with an iron bar and screw in/pull up)
+ drilling a shallow hole to plant into (eg. bulbs or saplings)

If you're new to fencing, there are a few of tools I'd get first. In order of preference:

1) Post hole digger (eg. Faithfull Post Hole Digger) which can dig a deep narrow hole in average soil and lift the loose soil out. From painful experience, make sure you get one like this with decent brackets that will stop the two handles clashing when you open/close them or you'll keep crashing your fingers together

2) Post spade (eg. Silverline 598415 Forged Drain Spade) which is narrower than a standard spade.

Very disappointed that only three welds hold this tool together. The slightest bit of hard ground or small stones, and the blade buckled and eventually the welds gave way. At only £14 I'm not surprised!! Have now invested in hopefully a replacement that is suitable for the task.

Although a good piece of equipment, before i'd finished digging out the first hole the screw part came away from it's welding and bent. This didn't help with making the other holes, and i had to keep bending back the screw part, to be able to use it effectively. The manufacturer needs to make sure that the item is welded sufficiently.

I thought this was too good to be true. The price was good and it was delivered very quickly. I was very very impressed. Only trouble was I tried to use it to bore a hole for some fence posts and it just wont cut into the soil/clay.

I spent an hour trying to dig one hole and I got no deeper than 5 inches! There's no rocks just soil and clay, but all that seems to happen is that it polishes the bottom of the hole.

I am going to try to alter the angle of the auger and sharpen it to see if that will help.

If your soil is any tougher than sand, i'd give this little toy a miss. A total waste of time.
Unless of course you have the services of a 200lb builder to sit his workmans butt on it as you try to turn it.
Now that's a good idea.......!!!

This Post Auger T Bar Snapped the first time used it. Only good for sand or when planting. Buy a more robust product £40+ if you are using fence posts,or dig out with a shovel.
Must say that AMOZON were very good at dealing with this issue,returns/apart from the fact have now got a brand new auger that don't want, will give to the school fair.

I purchased this to dig a number of post holes for my fence.

This only lasted 1/2 a hole. On digging this the tip split and bent making the tool useless.

I was tempted by the price but I wish I just went for a more expensive and proven option

Welds sheared off during first hole and that was the replacement one after the first one arrived with a sheared off weld. Save your money!
