1.0 out of 5 stars Sadly Misleading 12 Aug 2013
By Ivan TOP 1000 REVIEWER
What a great idea, one might think. A basic pocket hole jiglet without any of the bells, whistles and hype of the expensive system jigs. It made me chance a few bob and have a go.

I wasted money that could have been put towards a Kreg, or a Dakota or xyz...

Fundamental issue - ALL the stepped PH drill bits that actually make accurate, strong pocket-holing possible are 3/8" - about 9.5 mm. NONE of the drill guides supplied with this thing will take such a drill bit.

Sure, one can cut a slanty hole in a piece of wood with a 10mm bit etc. - IF one can clamp it in the right place, which is near impossible to calculate and physically difficult because it skids round like an egg on teflon unless clamped hard enough to trash the wood.
The resulting hole will then be missing the stepped-drill pilot hole, so 'tis almost impossible to steer the screw correctly. . This might be OK for rustic garden furniture on unplaned wood but one will rip hair out and cry if attempting a bookcase or, heaven forbid, drawers. My attempts were attended by all the frustrations and problems that other reviewers have mentioned previously

The "real" jigs work brilliantly because they produce neat holes in the right place which will then allow screws to tightly join together a glue joint (or even a screw-only joint if the stock is thick enough.) without too much frustration, and if the wood is cut square one can make precise, strong and attractive joinery without years of apprenticeship.

For an entry level clamp-it-yourself gadget, the Kreg Mini Jig Kit will have one producing accurate, fuss-free joints wihtin minutes, and comes with a "real" PH drill bit which is depth-settable.

1.0 out of 5 stars Inexpensive but inconsistent results 8 Jan 2013
I thought I'd try this jig as a first foray into pocket joints, and despite lots of attempts I never got decent results with it. Firstly there are no markings on the jig so it takes a few test drills to get the correct placement, and even with considerable pressure, the shiny smooth underside means the jig slips on your workpiece. I resorted to using threadlock on the drill guides to get them to stay in place, as in use they come unscrewed before completing one hole and in turn trash the drill bit.

Based on my experience I don't agree with the suggestion that you'll get `consistently accurate screw joints', but I did waste lots of time and scrap wood in trying to make it work.

Although the Kreg R3 Pocket Hole Jig is considerably more expensive, I justified the purchase on the basis of the experience with this pocket jig.

3.0 out of 5 stars useful for rough work 31 Oct 2012
The jig has been useful for making pockets that will either be hidden or filled with a glued shaped dowel. The body is an aluminium alloy, which sheds and makes the wood turn black as the drill carries the particles into the wood. I have tried different bits to stop this, but no success. One of the hardened guides was badly threaded, but for the price, it has been useful.

3.0 out of 5 stars Notes on use of pocket hole jig 19 Jan 2014
Notes on Silverline pocket hole jig
I recently bought the jig and dowel drill set in the face of web site warnings and make the following comments that may be helpful.
Drilling into soft wood at 17 degrees is difficult with 8 mm dia. and larger bits, especially if over a knot. The S. dowel drills could not cope even normal to timber face. These were discarded but the collars retained. Pre-drilling with 6 dia bits assists. A table of positions of jig relative to stock ends, thicknesses, penetration of drill relative to jig feral and screw length is required. This will be approximately (mm)
Stock thickness 13 26 39 52
Jig position +10.5 -10.5 -32.2 -54.5
lower jig end forward (-) and rearward (+) of stock end
Penetration 43 65 88 110
Screw length 30 45 55 70
Screws do not have to be flat seated and domed headed, Philips head is ok.
Note - having pockets inside `box' is stronger than outside for the wood over the sloping screws is the first to split out.
Initial resistance to screw penetration may cause bit friction on aluminium jig but can be reduced as above measures.
The jig and stock piece must be very firmly clamped together in say the work horse jaws or carpenters vice. G clamps are insufficient ( hence special locking clamps and mechanical fixing to jig with patent systems).
Of course patent systems are neater to use, but at a cost and restricted stock and drill hole sizes. With repetitive deployment they are winners.

1.0 out of 5 stars Waste of money 16 April 2013

I thought this product would be an inexpensive way to start using a pocket hole jig for small projects I was doing.I should have just bought the more expensive version as this product performed badly and was really just a waste of time and money. The screw in sizes were threaded badly and it was packaged poorly.I urge you not to waste your time unless you want to use it as a paper weight.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pocket hole jig 24 Oct 2013
Verified Purchase
Many users of this jig have been disappointed . It is not a jig to use straight out of the box but can easily be converted to an excellent jig
You must use metric auger bits to fit the jig or if you use pocket hole bits only use the 10 mm fitting.
The book on pocket hole jig projects includes an excellent discription of making a jig using this product
