The item broke on its second use. The head was left in the log, the shaft in my hands. Amazon won't replace it unless I send the whole thing back - costs money for them and time I don't want to waste. It was doing just fine but there must be a reason this maul is so cheap - and I found it. I don't have the time to wait in all day and wait for a courier to pick up a broken maul which Amazon will simply throw away or spend more of their money forwarding on to Silverline for their money back. I think I'll buy a better quality one for more money elsewhere. Be wary of this item... you get what you pay for.

I have used this maul for three or four hours, but will not use it again. The rubber sleeve on the handle has come unstuck, and I only found out during full swing at a log - the sleeve stayed in my hands and the rest of the maul flew across the yard. The glue had failed without warning. Worse still, the end of the fibreglass shaft had splintered inside the sleeve. I will now invest in a better quality item with a one-piece hickory shaft. You do get what you pay for - but this is worse than cheap, it is also lethal.

I used an ordinary axe to split logs until one day, I caught the hickory handle on the edge of the log and broke it. As a replacement, I purchased the Silverline 763553 Fibre Shaft Log Splitting Maul. It was delivered very promptly and was well wrapped. A bit like a sledge hammer with a sharpened edge, this tool makes short work of splitting logs. Much better than an ordinary axe and the fibre handle has a rubber sheath, which lessens the shock should one catch the handle on the log being split. Usually, one blow is enough to cleave a thick log such is the momentum of the heavy head. I am amazed that all this time, I have managed without this wonderful tool.

absolute rubbish and dangerous

Avoid like the plague
Bought this on 28th Feb 2012, used it - at most - half a dozen times, whilst *gently* splitting a small log into largish kindling today (21/4/12) the head fell off!!! Read more

splitting maul not fit for purpose
just started to use this and its usless heads fell off the shaft as resin that holds it in place as broken up would,nt buy another as its dangerous
