The spade was heavy and appeared substantial however I was concerned with the area at the bottom of the shaft. The casting was uneven and looked to be much less able to withstand the rigours of a 'heavy duty spade'.
I was using the spade to remove small bushes around the garden. I ground the dull edge of the spade and set about the task. I am retired and not of the 'brick ...house' stature! All went very well indeed for the first couple of hours and I removed several bushes with very little disturbance to the surrounding lawn area. Then without warning when attempting to raise another bush the spade bent in half and snapped. Rather shockingly this was without any major effort. Fortunately I had only had the spade a couple of days and so no problems with returning to Amazon.

I purchased this Silverline Product after having broken 2 x Units that I had purchased from B&Q
The new unit appears to be of superior construction to the B&Q Unit and to date is doing sterling service

Given my history of snapping off blades and snapping ashwood shafts- i thought I'd solved my problems reading the reviews on this. So it arrived damaged- big divot out of the wooden handle and various scuffs up and down. No matter i sanded the handle and sharpened the blade. Now the builders left a lot of debris under my lawn - but digging out a stone smaller than a housebrick the whole thing bent just above the blade where the handle is forged into it. Yes it is a usefully heavy and the blade is thick. But this is a relic of a bygone era - presumably before they discovered you could put carbon into steel. If you want the reassurance of a spade that feels like it is made from cast iron - yes buy it. But it is no stonger than cast iron and flawed in design. There was no significant weight applied to the spade -just the force of my two hands. My last spade snapped (10 quid LIdl spade) with me levering my entire body weight (15 stones) to get a boulder the size of a microwave oven out of a flowerbed. It snapped lengthwise along the blade so there was still enough of it left for me to complete the job - a heroic death. It lasted a year in my hands. I showed my drain spade to my neighbour- half an hour before it buckled. I am the laughing stock of my street. It is now "v" shaped so posting it back will be a real pain too. I will have to queue in the post office tomorrow with a bent spade... my humiliation is not yet complete.

Bought this for gardening, and am delighted with it.

It stands considerably taller than a normal garden spade, mostly due to the much longer blade. It is easily twice the weight of a garden spade; much of the weight is in the blade, but the strong tubular steel shaft also adds weight.

It is hand forged, and the thickness of the steel in the blade is about double that of most modern garden spades. The blade is also slightly irregular in shape and thickness, due to it being hand forged rather than mass produced. Not a problem. Mine was not sharp when it arrived, but a few minutes with an angle grinder put a good edge on it, and I have found that the steel is holding the edge very well, despite use in quite stony soil.

For gardening, three things make this stand out over traditional spades. First, the weight of the spade, combined with the cutting edge being only about half as wide as a traditional spade, means that it's easy to concentrate a lot of force in a relatively small area. If you are making planting holes around trees and shrubs you will be able to chop down through roots with much less effort than with a garden spade. Second, if you are planting bulbs that want to go deep, it is much easier to get a deep hole, due to the length of the blade, but it is also much easier to make only one neat and relatively narrow hole, so planting big bulbs like lilies in among existing plants is quicker and neater. Third, it is much stronger than most traditional spades; when you're levering up heavy or compacted soil, you can really put your weight on this without feeling it starting to flex. Modern mass-produced garden spades are flimsy in comparison.

For gardeners, it won't replace your traditional spade completely, but it will do some jobs very much better.

enabled me to dig post holes that were vertical and deep so when I put in the concrete mix I used far less than expected. Great tool wish I had bought one years ago it made the job so much quicker and easier than using a normal digging spade
