Small, robust, accurate, the cheapest on the market, well-made & will surely last a lifetime, so why only 3 stars????
The legal tyre tread depth for cars is 1.6 mm, straight and pure. Why then do the measurements only give you 1mm graduations (and nothing inbetween)?
I sense that this has been produced mainly for the European & American market (whose laws probably better reflect this guage), but for the purposes of the UK, only an approximation of tread depth can be achieved...
Had they just put one mark at the 1.6 mm point, I would have given it 5 stars... As it is, 0.6 of 1mm is too small a measurement to mark yourself with any great precision, and I wouldn't much fancy the local constabulary having cause to question the accuracy of any DIY job!
I have to say that the guage is usuable, as if the measurement shows below 2mm you're pretty close to illegal if a car & might decide to change your tyre rather than risk 3 points. Having said that, with the hideous cost of tyres & the current recession, you might just want (much like me) to use every last micron of tyre tread available.
Not wonderful... I wonder if the Draper one marks 1.6mm? I would bet it does...

Update: The "32nds" marks in black (I guess these represent 1 inch divided by 32) are seemingly pretty useless EXCEPT that the 2/32nd mark offers the best (closest) approximation of at 1.6mm tread, this mark equalling 1.5875mm (very, very close indeed). So if you CANNOT QUITE see the black line of this marking point, then you have 1.6mm or more. I'm happy with this, but please be cautious if adopting it yourself. I hope that this helps...

This is excellent value for money, and feels like a good quality item. It has a clip so you can clip it onto a shirt pocket if you want. The pointy bit is narrow enough to fit in small gaps in tread and the small size of the item makes it easy to use in crampt locations (for example the spare wheel in your boot). The markings are clear enough to read in a dimly lit garage. Definitely recommended especially at such a low price.

Does what it says on the tin & and has a lifetime gaurantee - as there's nothing that can really wear out. Why pay more!

Good, cheap, unusual scale.
Nothing wrong with this little device, it is accurate (I measured the protruding tip with a vernier caliper), well made and is simple enough to last forever. Read more

Excellent value
An amazingly good buy. Does exactly what you need to measure and monitor tyre tread depth. Others have criticised the fact that it does not identify precisely the European legal... Read more

Cheap, but not cheerful
Well it seemed to be good value, and for the money it probably is OK. Unfortunately, the one I got had the scale printed wrong so that 2mm came after 3mm. Read more

Road Legal?
Something everyone should have in the car!

Small easy to use and accurate for a simple check on the only item that keeps you on the road ie your tyres!

Useless
The range of tread depth measured goes from zero to 25mm but loses half its accuracy by also measureing in 32nds of an inch, (which is no use to anyone). Read more

Good for the price you pay!
Pretty good if you want a cheap way to measure the depth of tread on your tire. The millimetres are not that accurate, but enough to let you know when a trip to Kwik-Fit is needed.
