Picked this up for emptying some diff casings that didn't have drain points.

At first I figured it was completely useless, because it barely developed any vacuum whatsoever and would have taken several hours to have drained 2 litres of diff oil!

However, on inspection, turns out the flap within the pump that acts as a valve was incorrectly fitted and was not sealing upon pumping. A quick removal of the circlip, re-seat of the flap properly, and the item was working 100% as expected - and did the job fine.

Clearly not much quality control going on at Silverline but provided you're happy to do a bit of fiddling (if you get a bad one), then worth the money.

For those of us unable to crawl about underneath a car to perform an oil change, this was the perfect tool to conduct an oil change from above the engine. There was another reviewer who recommended warming the clear tubes with a hairdryer to straighten them out for better control when using - which was an invaluable tip together with connecting the two lengths together. Someone else I think suggested using a tiny amount of petrol to clean the oil out after use - another handy tip for those of us who like to keep things clean and tidy. I would add to those tips that one length of tubing comes with a flow regulator attached, which for an oil change is not required. After some fiddly experimentation I eventually found it came off rather easily, but there are no instructions about it's removal.

For anyone who has never done an oil change using an extractor before, I would advise having a container for old oil to hand, that is lager than volume you expect to empty - it also means that you can use the same pump on any capacity engine. The experienced and professionals will already know that. But the last garage to touch my car before I carried out the oil change, had over topped up by 2.5ltrs! Thankfully I hadn't driven the car far before doing the change.

This is a good product to use if you are doing a service on your car. The long tube ensures that it can get very drop out, with a bit of wiggling.

This is a how to: get your oil nice and warm, you can do this by nipping to a local motoring shop to pick up a solution hat you can use in your oil to break up congested areas. Once your oil has reached normal operating temperature, park you car on a hill.
You should have with you containers to fill up, rags (you WILL need them), the specific oil for replacement and a bucket to put the full containers of used oil into for transport (don't want the containers to accidentally leak in your motor).
Open the can of solution to add to your oil, it should have a how to on the back, if not let in run in your car at an idle speed or a little faster, for around 5-10 minutes.
After this switch off the engine. Assemble your oil pump. Then put the tube in the dip stick and pump it baby!!

However this is where the product didn't get five stars. I had to constantly pull at the line on the container to assure the vacuum was being created inside the pump.
This could get a little annoying at times.

However, this product did the job. My sump was bone dry!

The 2 lengths of tubing that came with the pump were tightly coiled to fit in the box and had to be straightened using heat from a hair drier before they were any use. The smaller diameter tube fits into a 2 inch section of larger tube to adapt it to the pump inlet, but not tightly enough to form a seal, I had to wrap some plumbers PTFE tape round it to seal it before the pump would pull a vacuum. These are small problems (you could always use your own tubing) the pump and bottle seem fairly well made for the price and removed the hydraulic fluid from the reservoir on my Citroen effortlessly.

I bought this Silverline Oil Extractor Pump for changing the oil on my car. High mileage means that I do oil changes every 10 or 12 weeks and jacking up the car and draining the sump is a real chore. This pump does exactly what it claims. You lower the clear plastic suction pipe down the dipstick hole as far as it will go, pump the handle at the top (it's like a bicycle pump) and oil rises up the tube and into the jug. When the jug is nearly full, which only takes a few minutes, you unscrew the suction tube which releases the vacuum and pour the old oil into a waiting container using the convenient handle. Then, if there's more oil to extract, reconnect the suction tube and pump again. When the sump is empty you can hear a gurgling noise as air enters the tube, like reaching the end of a McDonald's milkshake. The pump extracted as much oil as I would expect to collect from the sump drain plug in a conventional oil change.

When the pump was delivered there were two suction tubes of different diameters in the box. Both were tightly coiled and I had to spend some time warming them gently with a hairdryer to straighten them before first use. In fact, assuming you've warmed the engine before the oil change, the pipe becomes quite flexible as soon as the warm oil has passed through it but you might struggle to get that coiled pipe down to the sump unless you've straightened it first. It's a good idea to clean the suction pipe and jug after use so that you can see the oil flow clearly next time, so before packing it away I sucked up a little petrol with it and swilled it around the jug, which left the pipe and jug as clean as new for next time.
