About the Author

Laurent Bugnion works as a senior user-experience integrator for IdentityMine, one of the leading companies committed to redefining the user experience and a Microsoft Gold Partner dedicated to easing the adoption and optimal use of Microsoft presentation technologies, including Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), Silverlight, Windows Phone 7, Surface, and Windows 7.

Originally an electronics engineer, Laurent achieved postgrad credentials in software engineering in 1999. Before IdentityMine, he worked for Siemens for 13 years, introducing WPF and other .NET 3.5 technologies worldwide. His responsibilities involved developing with the previously mentioned technologies, training and coaching his colleagues, coordinating and integrating the graphic-design work, and fostering relationships with Microsoft. Before that, he wrote embedded C/C++, and then moved to desktop computers in Java, JavaScript, and eventually .NET (desktop and ASP.NET).

Privately, he codes in Silverlight, WPF, and ASP.NET. He blogs on http://blog.galasoft.ch and writes on http://www.galasoft.ch, where he publishes articles, prototypes, and demos related to the previously mentioned technologies. In 2008, he earned an MCTS for WPF. (In October of that same year, his book Silverlight 2 Unleashed was published.) This year, 2010, is his fourth year as a Microsoft MVP (Silverlight), and he was selected this year as Silverlight MVP of the year.

Laurent is based in Zurich, Switzerland, where he lives with his wife, Chi Meei, and his two daughters, Alise and Laeticia.

5.0 out of 5 stars An outstanding reference 30 Nov 2010
Format:Paperback
The Unleashed series of books are generally of a very high standard, so Laurent has to pull something special out of the bag to keep up to the standard that is expected of this series. Fortunately, for the reader, Laurent achieves this with some aplomb. First of all, the bad - Laurent doesn't cover the features that were present in Silverlight 2 in any depth in this book. Now, the good - the version of the book that covered the Silverlight 2 features is available as a free PDF for the reader. By doing this, Laurent helps devs familiar with SL get up to speed quickly with new features without having to wade through the features that they already know about, while people who need more detailed information have all the help they need in the PDFs.

Laurent has an easy writing style, and his wealth of experience is shown in the way he covers practical examples of how to write commercial level Silverlight applications that really cross the developer/designer boundary. It's fair to say that Laurent is the author of one of the most popular MVVM toolkits around at the moment, and this shines through in the way he shows the reader how to write Blendable MVVM applications. If you need a book on Silverlight, then why not buy a book from one of the finest programmers I know, and one of the finest proponents of Silverlight there is?

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up to the previous edition 22 July 2011
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Silverlight seems to become a different beast with each version, so I bought this just as I was thrown onto a Silverlight-based project using Prism and MEF (about which I knew nothing). Mr Bugnion has once again produced a thoroughly readable and informative book, whose size belies the depth of its content.

Topics given space include the aforementioned Prism and MEF, but also Unity with a nice explanation of IoC and how it fits in with Silverlight. He also covers MVVM, Windows Phone development (briefly, but still very good), WCF integration (in its many flavours including RIA services), and a host of other stuff that is being used right now in real-world projects. As with most of the recent 'Unleashed' books (and appropriate for a UI platform) the whole thing is in colour.

It's worth noting that this is (almost) an addendum to the previous edition (Silverlight 2 Unleashed). In fact (and I don't know whether this is still the case) purchasing this book entitles you to an electronic download of the previous book.

An excellent book which covers pretty much everything a competent Silverlight developer would be expected to know.

2.0 out of 5 stars Kindle reader 11 Feb 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
The book was good enough in itself, high quality with good explanations. I've marked it a 2 stars because the publisher has made no attempt to publish a Kindle version of an acceptable standard. I hope they take note. It's essential for me to read the code along with the text, diagrams aren't so important and I don't expect a Kindle version to be reproducing large graphics to high definition. However code listings were inconsistent in size, sometimes too small to read and at other times huge. My only criticism therefore is that the Kindle version isn't to the same high standard as a published book.
