Product Description

Full Color Code samples appear as they do in Visual Studio and Expression Blend!

Printed entirely in color, with helpful figures and syntax coloring to make code samples appear as they do in Visual Studio and Expression Blend!

Silverlight is Microsoft’s new web-based User Interface (UI) technology, based on Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), which is introducing many revolutionary concepts in the world of UI development. Silverlight uses XAML, with tools like Expression Design and Expression Blend, to create astonishing UI effects (such as gradients, compositions, and animations.) In addition to the richness of the UI elements, Silverlight 2 allows the use of C# or VB in addition to JavaScript to automate web pages. With Silverlight, you have the power of .NET on multiple platforms (IE and Firefox on Windows, Firefox and Safari on Macintosh, and Firefox on Linux). The author brings you up to speed very quickly with numerous hands-on examples.

  • Use XAML to create state-of-the-art user interfaces
  • Create XAML transforms and animations
  • Design compelling user experiences with Microsoft Expression Blend
  • Integrate media into your rich Internet applications
  • Program Silverlight with both JavaScript and .NET languages
  • Deploy Silverlight content to web pages
  • Encode videos with Expression Media Encoder
  • Make the most of Silverlight elements, resources, and styles
  • Use templates to quickly change your application’s look and feel
  • Efficiently debug Silverlight code
  • Use design tools to create graphics that import seamlessly into Silverlight

Laurent Bugnion has been a software engineer since 1996. He has worked with many programming languages and environments, including C, C++, Java, HTML/CSS/JavaScript, and, since 2002, the Microsoft .NET platform. He has been honored twice as a Microsoft MVP: first for ASP.NET and now for Client Application Development. He blogs about Silverlight and related technologies at http://blog.galasoft.ch.

5.0 out of 5 stars New to Silverlight? There's no better book, 16 Nov 2008
By I. D. Smith - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I average two or three new technical books a month and wish a fraction of those I purchase were as well thought-out, well-written, polished and presented as this. In many ways it's reaffirmed my dying belief that books still have value in a world where the internet holds sway.

The book assumes you know nothing, gives you the back story that means you UNDERSTAND rather than just blindly follow-by-rote the technology, and makes the learning process fun along the way. It's the best "get you up and running with a new technology and highlight all the important areas" technical book I've read in a long time.

If you know nothing about Silverlight and want to get started on what can be a very steep learning curve this book is meant for you, with no assumptions that you already understand .NET and web programming thoroughly before you start. But that doesn't mean the book's full of endless fluff: Bugnion gets you up-to-speed with what you need to know about the basics clearly and efficiently, with no confusion, such that it serves as an excellent reminder to all no matter how many years of .NET or general web development you may (or may not) have under your belt.

The tedious and boring "control by control" example approach taken by other Silverlight books is thankfully abandoned as Bugnion introduces simple but fun animation and effects examples early on, so that you learn by doing and enjoying the experience rather than just being presented with reformatted, dull-as-dishwater MSDN reference material. He covers not just the official tools like Visual Studio and Blend, but also KaXaml and SilverlightPad. He points out best practices along the way and tries to get you doing things "right" rather than just "doing something that kinda works" which is the fault of far too many technical "teach the beginner" books out there these days.

Most importantly the author is at pains to make sure you understand the important areas, know what's appropriate when, and don't just "learn by rote" - all key to becoming a good Silverlight developer. The author's love for his subject shines through on every page, but that doesn't mean he's afraid to point out shortcomings of the technology where they occur.
This book enthused me where the other books I'd read (seven titles and early adopter editions from Microsoft Press, Manning Press, Apress and O'Reilly) lay abandoned just a few chapters in.

To be honest, it's the sort of book I thought had vanished in the current "it's all free on the web, and the book and technology are out of date even before we've gone to print so why should we care about any sort of quality?" world that technical book companies seem to base their businesses on these days.

At the asking price, given that it's printed in full colour on high quality paper, where more expensive offerings from rival publishers appear to be printed on toilet paper using a nearly empty toner cartridge, I think it's a steal!

All that being said, if you want an in-depth treatise on the internals of the Visual State Manager or the more obscure idiosyncrasies of "ObjectAnimationUsingKeyFrames" then this probably isn't the book for you (although Bugnion will point you to where you can go when you need more information). I'm guessing this explains the rather low 3.5 rating ( based on three customer reviews) over on the US Amazon site at the time of writing (which we Brit purchasers can't add reviews to), presumably based on the 'rock star' PDC crowd being first to get and review the book. This book isn't written for those who've been playing with the beta and CTP's for the last 18 months, and it seems the "Unleashed" title has confused potential readers about that fact. It's written for those of us working in the real world needing to get up to speed with a new technology as quickly and efficiently as possible on top of doing the day job.

If you want a beautifully produced, well thought-out introduction to the technology, with real world tips and warnings and all those questions you were about to ask answered along the way, then I can't recommend this book highly enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Silverlight trainer's point of view, 11 Dec 2008
By Mark Price (London, England) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
As a trainer who teaches many .NET technologies I had been looking for course material for a Silverlight course. Although the Silverlight SDK provides adequate reference material, what I needed was a book to provide a foundation for a great learning experience. After buying and reviewing all the other Silverlight books and being disappointed, I was delighted to discover that Silverlight 2 Unleashed is exactly what I need. It is FUN and INFORMATIVE which are vital qualities when teaching something new. Highly recommended!

2.0 out of 5 stars Not a Professional Level Book, 23 Feb 2009
I guess I am at odds with the other reviewers of this book. The book seems to be aimed at non-developers who are starting from scratch with Silverlight.

It does provide some useful information, but it is not very well presented. To learn much from this book you need to work through the book from front to back with Expression Blend and Visual Studio at hand. The examples are show in a bitty fashion, with no complete code samples, so you cannot see how the solution to a task fits together. It does not seem possible to jump to a chapter and simply learn the subject because you are dependent upon code examples from previous chapters to provide the foundations for many chapters. For example, in chapter 19 on User Controls there is a code "snippit" that references a property called ThumbItemsControl. I cannot find the code "snippit" where that property was created though. Just putting a complete lists in the relevant places would make it so much easier to follow, and learn. There is a dependency upon Expression Blend to auto generate code as well, where as I would like to see what the final XAML and other code looks like.

I also lost count of the number of times this book says this or that is "beyond the scope of this book". The scope of the book is far to narrow for a professional developer. The technical level of Sams "UNLEASHED" titles seems to be "Random". This book is printed in colour. Nice, but I would have prefered clarity and full examples. I don't think there is one single diagram in the book. There are chapters where it works through the types of controls and parent classes for controls, but at no point does it show a simple class diagram!
