Silver-Tongued Devil was brilliant. I expected great things from Jaye Wells, but truth is that Green-Eyed Demon (Sabina Kane) (the third book) left me wondering where she could go with the series. Everything had ended so happily that I couldn't really work out why Wells needed two more books.

The reason? Because there is no such thing as a happy ending, not even in fiction! In real life, people don't just go from being a ruthless assassin for 50 years to being a warm-hearted softie overnight. And in real life, love and friendship aren't the only ingredients to lasting relationships. So while Sabina might want to ride into the sunset, that wasn't going to happen any time soon. And to honest, I am so very grateful for that!

Let's start with Sabina. She's a take-no-prisoners woman who has a panache for violence. It's fabulous and depressing at the same time. But in the third book in the series, it felt like she was trying to be someone she wasn't. Luckily, that attempt is dealt with head-on in Silver-Tongued Devil. Not only did she deal with her own demons, she dealt with the way people around her were treating her too. *cough* Adam. *cough*

And while all the inter-character relationships were fantastically done, it was the gargantuan plot twists that made this book stand out. Jaye Wells is not afraid to "go there". She made some pretty big revaluations in this book and made her characters suffer through pretty horrific consequences because of them. What was especially gratifying was the way the plot built on existing scenes - Wells has been laying the groundwork for the events of Silver-Tongued Devil over the entire series. Now that? That's a real writer.

While the first half of the book was good, the second half was fantastic. The pace and the plot just grew more and more intriguing with each page - I found myself thinking about the book whenever I'd put it down. This book made going about my day a very frustrating venture, as all I wanted to do was read!! The only reason it isn't getting 5 stars? Well, it's not quite as funny as its predecessors. Other than that, it was perfection.

Bottom line? Silver-Tongued Devil was everything I didn't even know I wanted. It was a gripping installment to an already brilliant series. Go forth and read it!

Another action packed installment to this great series. I loved catching up with Sabina and the gang. Jaye Wells writing is fantastic and her characters just come to life. This book takes a darker turn with the tam facing more threats, both personal and professional from the mages and vampires. There's also the usual humour and wise cracks from Gighul and Sabina. If you like paranormal or urban fantasy then this series is for you.

A book of two halves 24 Feb 2012
By Geekius
Format:Kindle Edition
It was great to be back with Sabina and her pals in this, the fourth instalment of the Sabina Kane series. I very much enjoyed the first three books and was desperately wishing good things on Sabina and Adam in the previous book so that they might finally get it together. ('cause, you know, if you wish for something hard enough, it will happen). And how good was the end of Green-eyed Demon? So good, is the answer to that. Sabina finally stopped being a Fraidy Cat and admitted she loved Adam after nearly losing him to mad Maisie, and we all breathed a sigh of contented relief.

It was a slight disappointment then, after all the high emotion and drama from the end of that book, to discover that three months later at the beginning of this one, they have morphed into the world's dullest couple. Adam is being Mr. Judgy Von Holier Than Thou about Sabina's vamp side. And their shows of affection are mostly limited to unromantic pecks on the cheek and an occasional arm draped around a shoulder. I realise once the main couple get together the sexual tension part will be missing as we move towards more comfortable togetherness, but surely there should still be sexual attraction? I would have liked to think that after only a matter of weeks they still find each other more appealing than this.

And it wasn't until much further into the book that I began to understand the possible reason for Wells writing them this way, and by the midway point, the drama stakes for these two have been upped almost beyond bearing for both of them. And all was forgiven. I still love Adam and Sabina as a couple despite their problems and now having finished the novel I am back to being optimistic for them at the very least. Who ever said love was easy, eh?

The mystery plot was also a little slow to get going. I have to say if this book was a football match, all the goals were scored in the second half and I did have a moment in the middle wondering what had happened to these characters that used to be such fun. Even the ever glamorous Pussy Willow has turned from a fun-loving cross dressing fae with a heart of gold, to a drag queen bitch diva from hell. Her and Gighul are having some kind of "issues". I'm not at all sure what's going on there but I hope we get the old PW back soon.

All in all, not the finest of the series so far, but a must read in terms of plot development. This is one of those occasions where I wish for half stars because I would give it 3.5, but since the end was so good I'll round up to 4.
