The Black Box Revelation is an up-and-coming band out of Belgium, consisting of just 2 guys (Jan Paternoster and Dries Van Dijck). Their 2008 debut album "Set Your Head On Fire" was released to critical acclaim (in Europe anyway, it got little or no attention in the US), and now comes the highly anticipated sophomore album. If you are unfamiliar with the band's sound, think of it as the Black Keys-meet-Black Rebel Motorcycle Club.
"Silver Threats" (11 tracks; 45 min.) starts of with a rebel-rousing "High On a Wire", and doesn't let up from there. "Where Has All This Mess Begun" comes with great distorted electric guitars, which are even more upfront in "Run Wild". Wow, what an incredible 1-2-3 punch to start the album. "5 O'clock Turn Back the Time" is the band at its garage band's rawest. "Sleep While Moving" is a slow distorted track, reminding me of REM's "You" from their Monster album. "Our Town Has Changed For Years Now" is the only acoustic track on the album. It all leads up to "Here Comes the Kick", the 9+ min. monster-sized closer and another song that really reminded me of BRMC.
In all, this is nothing short of a fantastic album. When I go to Belgium later this summer to visit family, I will have an occasion to see these guys live, and I truly cannot wait for that. Meanwhile, "Silver Threats" is sure to end up very high on my year-end "best of" list this year. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
