About the Author
Sinéad Gleeson is a journalist and broadcaster who writes for The Irish Times about arts and culture. She is a report for RTÉ One s The Works program, is a regular reviewer on RTÉ Radio 1's arts show Arena and co-founder of The Anti Room. She lives in Dublin with her husband, two children and too many books.

If you want to buy a shiny new collection of short fiction this Christmas, and feel good not just because the stories are excellent but because the money's going somewhere useful, choose Silver Threads Of Hope. Proceeds from the book go towards Console, the charity which helps support people in Ireland who are at risk of suicide, or are suffering bereavement as a result. There is no thematic link to the fiction, which is deliciously varied. You'll find new stories by writers whose work you may already be familiar with... Kevin Barry's brilliantly funny `Supper Club' kicks off the collection and as it does so dispels any fears that the anthology will be 'worthy' because of its charity link. Also funny (of course) is Roddy Doyle, and (surprisingly) Emma Donoghue. There's plenty other writers here whose writing you will probably already have read elsewhere: John McKenna, Anne Enright, Claire Kilroy, Keith Ridgway, Colum McCann... and maybe some whose work you'll want to get to know better in future: Mike McCormack, Nuala Ní Chonchúir, Siobhan Mannion, Colm Keegan, Mary Costello. But it's all quality stuff.
