A Silver Lining – Book Three in the Hearts of Gold Series

In strictly chapel Pontypridd in 1938, tongues are quick to wag when Alma Moore, abandoned by her lover, is rushed to hospital with stomach pains.
The doctor may call it appendicitis, but the scandal-mongers think they know better. And then Bethan John, who's too good for the rest of them since she married a doctor, comes back to her mining family's house with her new baby - but without her husband, or any word of explanation.
Ostracised by most - even their own mothers - Alma and Bethan face a lonely struggle to survive. Then taciturn Russian Charlie, an outsider haunted by his own past, reaches out the hand of friendship to them both, and in so doing begins to thaw his own heart...

    Review

The author of Hearts of Gold and One Blue Moon has come up with a third volume in this gritty saga of life in a small Welsh town in the last 1930s. Bethan Powell is having a baby. Her doctor husband, Andrew, is appalled when the baby is born with cerebral palsy and Bethan will not allow it to be put into an institution. Both parents blame themselves for the child's condition. Eventually bethan leaves Andrew in london and returns to her family in South Wales. Meanwhile, Alma Moore is struggling to keep her bling mother when suddenly her appendix flares up and she needs an operation, foring her to give up work when money is almost non-existant. It is a powerful tale of survival and hardship, very well crafted and with strong characters, all of which helps make this an engrossing story. CATRIN COLLIER/KATHERINE JOHN/CARO FRENCH/KATHERINE HARDY/K A JOHN -
At present (July 2015) working on Princes & Peasants the sequel to The Tsar's Dragons (out November 1915). She has just completed Scorpion Sunset the third in the Long Road to Baghdad trilogy which will be published July 1915. Look out for her raunchy Caro French Farcreek novels, Lady Luck, Lady Lay, Lady Chance named after the Cullen boys' yachts.
She has penned scripts and has had 3 stage plays professionally performed. Her first novel, Hearts of Gold, filmed as a TV mini series by BBC Worldwide attracted an audience of 6.8 million on UK TV. TY CATRIN, an Education Centre in Pontypridd named after Catrin Collier, opened in 2003. Her alter ego Katherine John's crime book, By Any Name, was filmed by Tanabi in Wales in 2014, starring Cengiz Dervis, Samira Mohammed Ali and Dan Richardson. The photographs and video are from the filming.
Catrin's most bemused moment. When someone commented, "It will be wonderful for Pontypridd when you die." (Many of her novels are set in the town)
Her best "putting in place moment". When someone joined a queue at a signing session in Waterstones and waited ten minutes to say, "I don't want a book, love, but as you're here for two hours, look after my shopping for me." - She did.
Her proudest moment, when she discovered her Catrin Collier novel, One Last Summer, based on my Prussian born mother's wartime diaries was named recommended reading for adults by the Holocaust Day Memorial Trust.

A Silver Lining is the third in a series of eight books set in Pontypridd between 1930 and 1950. All the books can be enjoyed on their own - but it is nice to read them chronologically to follow the fortunes of the Powell family and their friends over the years.
There is a good mixture of characters featured in A Silver Lining, who are experiencing a range of troubles and heartaches as tensions are building in pre-war Pontypridd.
Alma Moore is struggling - her lover Ronnie married another girl and moved to Italy in the last book, and she is lonely and vulnerable. She has become the target of destructive gossip, and she is having serious financial troubles that could drive her and her mother to the workhouse.
Bethan Powell returns to Pontypridd with her baby - but without her husband - and has to cope with some of the worst nightmares a mother can have.
'Charlie the Russian' is embarking on a new business venture and trying to help some of his friends and neighbours who he sees are in need - but he is struggling to keep his past buried and his need for love and companionship suppressed.
Evan Powell unwittingly manages to get into trouble with the police in an incident that will change his, and his family's lives, forever.
As the book progresses, silver linings to all the troubles and woes slowly emerge - some are brighter than others, but there are definite silver linings to all the clouds.
A Silver Lining is beautifully and cleverly written; it magically transports you to Pontypridd in 1938, sensitively describes a range of personal and social difficulties; and is utterly engrossing - a very moving fantastically good read.

The first book in the series is:

This is the 3rd book in the series and i couldn't wait to read next one, I'm now on the 6th book Past Remembering which is just as good as all the others have been.My sister told me about this author who a friend of hers told her about it. I must admit i'd never heard of Catrin Collier till then but she's proving to be a big hit with us. I've read most of the books on my Kindle but the last 2 in the series i have in paper back. If you have chance to read her books you won't be dissapointed.
