5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic Children's Thriller, 1 Jul 2003
By Kitty Butterfly (London United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
This book was read to the class by my year six teacher and nearly ten years on I still regard it as one of my favourite books. It is filled with suspense and threat of danger, making it one of the most effective children's thrillers. I searched madly for a copy a couple of years ago and am really glad it's back in print because it truly deserves another generation of readers. I'd recommend it for readers around 10-12 years old.

5.0 out of 5 stars A childhood favourite that hasn't diminished with time!, 9 May 2001
By A Customer
The Silver Crown was the best book I had ever read at age 9, partly because the main characters were of a similar age to me. As with the Harry Potter books, they are having to act independently of adults in desperate situations through no fault of their own. Ancient lore and modern technology combine to create a formidable power, against which Ellen and Otto must prevail. Ellen's strong character and dignity accentuate her lineage, and Otto's adventurous nature balances well with this. Some beautiful descriptions enhance the book, and some exciting interactions keep the pace going as the two heroes make their journey and meet people who help them to their goal.

5.0 out of 5 stars brilliant fantasy. loved it as a child, still love it now., 11 Jul 2005
I first read this outstanding book when I was about eight or nine years old, and it made a huge impression on me. It was such a completely new reading experience for me, and it has lost none of its freshness with repeated readings. It is a 'traditional' tale of good versus evil, but it is darker and more exciting than any so-called 'children's' books I've ever read. Absoutely wonderful... it will capture you from the first pages, when Ellen receives a beautiful silver crown for her birthday and decides to go out for a morning walk. Read it, everybody should.
