Tarnished Silver? 29 Aug 2002
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I've always thought Cliff did his best work in the 80's, and though this isn't quite up to the pop gem standards of I'm No Hero or Wired For Sound, it's still worthy. It is a very synthy, 80's sounding album, which could put some people off. You almost expect Howard Jones to turn up in the likes of Front Page and Locked Inside Your Prison! However, in the best stuff, like the classic Ocean Deep, Please Don't Fall In Love and The Golden Days Are Over, Cliff is truly at his best. Never mind the catchy but ludicrous Baby You're Dynamite, which S Club Juniors would probably reject on the grounds of it's immaturity, there's something for everyone here. He goes funky on Never Say Die and the rocky Love Stealer could be the Glitter Band! But somehow, it all sounds comfortably Cliff. Like his old TV chum, Olivia Newton-John, he's a bit unconvincing with the sexy stuff, like it's beneath him, but he's surely the best pop singer England has yet produced.

In 1983 Cliff Richard was keeping together his strong dominance on the UK singles and album chart. Most of his new material was being written either by Terry Britten or Alan Tarney and Cliff was moving into the areas which the artists of the day were exploring. Wired For Sound, The Only Way Out and Dreamin' were among his eighties success' so far. His album Wired For Sound had sold over 1 million copies and his Love Songs compilation had enjoyed a 5 week spell at No1 during 1981. In 1983 Silver provided a mixture of rock, pop and ballads onto on celebratory album to the man who gave Britain British modern music in its current form. The best songs on the album by a mile are Love Stealer and the gem Ocean Deep. Ocean Deep is a premier love song which can easily beat any love song hands down. It's a shame that in didn't fair any better than No 41 during a spell in the charts during the Spring of 1984. This was probably due to the albums major stay in the charts during 1983. Love Stealer shows that Cliff is a rock star and hasn't lost his hard rock edge which launched his career in September 1958.

So this album signifies the 25th anniversary of Britain's premier rock and pop star during 1983/1994. It provides an awesome listening experience and captures some of Cliff's finest songs ever made. It is a legendary album and is right up there with the best. Cliff Richard certainly rocked the world and continues to do so in 2004.

As pretty much every reviewer here has noted, this was the last Cliff Richard album you could listen to without needing to wince or reach for the 'skip' button on the CD player too often. The title track is a Sir Clifford Classic, in the worthy line of his late-70s/early-80s pop gems, Ocean Deep is a substantial ballad, "Please Don't Fall In Love" is one of a couple of songs contributed by Mike 'Womble' Batt and very classy indeed with its string arrangement. In fact, this track has aged rather better than the rest of the album, as it's not quite as synth-heavy as the other songs.

An honourable mention, then, for "Too Close to Heaven", which is one of the strongest songs on the album and possibly one of Cliff's best from the 80s. Also a Mike Batt composition and production, the orchestra-led backing has dated well. Best of all is the inventive "false ending" that sees the song pause, gather breath and then push on to a perfect close. It wasn't on the vinyl album, so it's good to see it on CD here.

Nice job, Sir Clifford, then. From here there was just the odd decent single - such as "Shooting from the Heart" the following year, "Some People" in '87 - and not a lot else if I'm honest. This is the last in an honourable line of solid pop albums from the [insert lazy bachelor/tennis/religious pun here] popster - buy with confidence.
