Feature packed, along with a good map you're away! Clearly marked in degree's (the other military type has Mils too) the liquid damped needle is accurate and reliable - as long as you keep it away from ferrous, magnetic objects or power lines! The 3 romers make for accurate grid reference taking on 1:25,000(2 1/2" to 1 mile); 1:50,000(1 1/4" to 1 mile) & 1:63,000(the old 1" to 1mile) scales. The magnifier is useful when looking at fine detail and the luminous markings are used in the dark. A recessed shaped hole for a neck string is well positioned and there are cm & inch graduations around the edges. Full info on useage can be found on web sites including Silva's own.
The best of the best! You don't really need a sighting compass and this is more robust.

For serious navigators 17 April 2009
I own a collection of compasses but, while all their needles point reliably north, this is my best one.

Distances are easier to measure courtesy of the romer scale for all map scales (including the increasingly popular 1 : 40,000 used by Harveys). It also has luminous markings, making it ideal for night navigation - you can see instantly when the 'red is in the shed'.

Its not the cheapest option but what's a few quid for an easier life?

I use the Silva primarily for hill walking using 1:25,000 OS maps. Before I purchased, I did some research into the features you need on a compass (and those you don't) ... and the Expedition 4 fits the bill perfectly. The in-built Romer scales are very handy, and as a previous reviewer has pointed out the rubber feet are surprisingly effective.

As for the luminous markings... a quick tip my father taught me from his time in the army... hold these closely to a bright light source (as close as you can without fear of melting!). Do this for about 30 seconds and hey presto....the glow will become significantly brighter. A domestic 100w light bulb will work best (before you set off) but a car headlight or even a bright torch will also work if you're out in the field. The effect is only temporary, but its amazing the difference this can make to the glow (potentially saving your night vision later on).

Oh, and if you need to brush up on your map and compass skills, I can recommed the following book:-
