Silva Field 7 compassAn excellent quality compass for general walking and hiking. The dial is clear and easy to read, plus the needle mount system employed by Silva means it doesn't 'stick' at certain directions when the compass is not exactly flat in your hand or on the map as other makes do. This is a brilliant entry level compass that will last years. Delivery time was superb even though it came from Europe.

This is a robust, clear and accurate piece of kit. I've tested it with other (more expensive) compasses and it performs very well indeed, especially for the price. I can only guess that the previous reviewer has received a rogue product and hope he got a replacement.

Fantastic product. Good build quality, nighttime use(glow markings), adjustment ring for magnetic declination, range (scale) markings, magnifying lens AND a five year warranty (!). Fantastic price for what you get. Excellent for teaching children map reading/compass use as tough build and easy to read. I never go hiking without it!

its amazing! If you use this with an ordnance survey map you can do this thing called navigation.
Unlike the crap thing you buy from halfrauds the batteries never run out on a map or compass, its difficult to damage it with water, and its performance doesn't diminish because of cold weather. If you don't know how to read a map and use a compass you can't be truly independent or truly free unless of course you don't want to go anywhere.

A great compass ideal for walkers who know how to use it. Take reasonably accurate bearings, find your position or find the correct direction. It feels well built, and the rubber bezel is easier to use than other compasses I've had to use.

Why not buy a cheaper version> because on the cheaper ones the needle takes longer to point north when disturbed and they get stuck when held at a slight angle. This one doesn't have that problem.

Tiny negatives: the glow in the dark isn't bright enough to be worth while, and the neck strap is a bit short.

It points North, with as far as I can see unerring reliability ! The vertical lines to match the Northings on orienteering maps are clear (the lines on the maps themselves not always so). The bezel (twisty round thing ) moves easily and precisely. The magnifier is small but powerful. The lanyard holds it at a good distance below your neck.

This is a great compass from Silva "the compass masters",
It happily shows you which way you should have gone after thirty minutes of your expedition leader telling you that "it doesn't look familiar but the right path should be just over that hill".
Also works very well at settling arguments with the wife as to which direction the North Pole is.

For an inexpensive compass it does a lot! In my opinion all a hiker needs in conjunction with a good map.
