5.0 out of 5 stars A medieval twist on "Rear Window" 6 July 1999
By A Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Patricia Ryan writes some of the best medieval historical romance novels in the business. SILKEN THREADS is a clever, well-plotted, sexy tale inspired by the Hitchcock film "Read Window." Graeham Fox is in London to fetch home the daughter of his master who suspects she is being abused by her husband, Rolf le Fever. But before Graeham can spirit her away, he is brutally attacked. Rescued by a stranger, he is taken to the home of the man's sister, Joanna Chapman, a merchant's wife. Close to being destitute, Joanna agrees to let Graeham rent her storeroom while his broken leg heals. The storeroom just happens to have a perfect view of le Fever's home, allowing Graeham to observe all manner of comings and goings, as well as his beautiful landlady whom he can't help but fall in love with. Hitchcock's movie is fun, but Patricia Ryan's SILKEN THREADS is fun and sexy.

4.0 out of 5 stars An enjoyable read 11 July 2011
By TC
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's the first Patricia Ryan novel I've read, and I really enjoyed it. Set in 12th century London, a fine, if light hearted tale of knights, lepars, lovers and attempted murder! The only reason I didn't give it five stars was the hilarious use of Americanisms throughout. eg. A silk merchant calling his former lover a "Goddamed crazy bitch" and the gardens were referred to as "out back". It makes me wonder if some Kindle novels are ever proof read? Anyway It was FREE, I enjoyed it, and loved the characters - Hope you will too!

4.0 out of 5 stars Really quite good 3 July 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Given that this is a freebie, I was extremely pleasantly surprised. It was well-written (at least, I didn't spot any drastic mistakes), well characterised and the plot was entertaining. As a mystery it wasn't 'that' mysterious and the end was slightly hokey (I found myself thinking 'What??'), but that didn't detract from a nice romance that was well placed in its context. I get irritated by historical romance writers who so obviously have not researched the period they are using, but this didn't happen here. I'm sure there were instances where things weren't entirely accurate, but they didn't grate or jump out at me (but then, I'm not a medieval expert anyway).
An enjoyable read, and I'll read more of this author - unlike some of the freebies around, she's worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars A fab book for a free read.
I really enjoyed this book. Quite a long book which is great considering it was free. You tend to find the free ones are very short and boring or just tasters of an author's talent... Read more
