Book Description

Eight years ago…

Thomas Cartwright and Lady Nicola Fitzgibbons were simply friends. Over the wall separating their homes, Thomas and Nicola talked of all things – his studies to become a barrister, her frustrations with a lady’s limitations.

All things end.

When her diplomat father gains a post in Hong Kong, Nicola must follow. Bored and alone, she falls into scandal, time and again. Mired in his studies of the law and aware of the need for circumspection, Thomas feels forced to sever their ties. Besides, a member of parliament cannot be associated with a woman of scandal—it isn’t proper.

But now Lady Nicola is back in London…and she won’t let Thomas ignore her.

4.0 out of 5 stars A LIGHT HEARTED ROMANCE! 19 May 2013
By **** - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Though short, this is a very good romantic story. Told in part through letters over the expanse of several years, two friends through misunderstandings eventually find love. Enjoyed this story very much. I just discovered Dean last fall, but she's already on my list of authors TBR.

5.0 out of 5 stars Special and irresistible 20 Jun. 2013
By Carole "The Romance Reviews" - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
I adore novels, but there is something special about a short story that I truly love. When a short story is as emotional and engaging and well done as this one is, it's a treat to be savored. Cassandra Dean knows her craft, and it shows in every scene of her first Silk Series installment.

Once upon a time, Thomas Cartwright and Lady Nicola Fitzgibbons were childhood friends who grew up next door to each other, meeting on either side of the garden wall to share all their secrets. Thomas discussed his dreams of becoming a barrister and making his adopted parents proud, while Lady Nicola whispered of her abhorrence of society's rules that keep ladies in their restrictive place. Then Lady Nicola's diplomat father was sent to Hong Kong, and for eight years, she and Thomas have been able to communicate only through letters--or the occasional mention of Nicola's scandals in the newspapers.

With each new bit of gossip that reaches his ears, Thomas knows that a man in his position cannot afford to consort with a lady with such a reputation and resolves to sever all ties with her. It's a resolution he somehow manages to keep--until Nicola herself returns to England. Now, though eight years may have taken their toll on their relationship, Nicola is determined to prove that some things never change...

The characters at the heart of this story are so vibrant and compelling that they leap off the page, capturing the heart and imagination within just a few pages. While Ms Dean's descriptions and insight are marvelous, readers are also treated to a peek at the correspondence between Nicola and Thomas, which added enormously to the foundation of their relationship, and also provides a glimpse beneath the facade each present to the world.

Though Thomas is all seriousness and focused on his career, he also has a sharp wit and a fabulously dry sense of humor, especially when Nicola is the focus of that attention. Most interesting though was Nicola's complexity--the contrast between her bravado and bravery and the fears and concerns she hides from all prying eyes. Though they couldn't be more different, this is a beautiful case of opposites attracting, and becoming better for the interaction. Once they are reunited, the chemistry between these two is utterly compelling, making it clear that their relationship is something truly special and worth every moment of heartache their distance may have caused.

The historic details and world-building in this story were also beautifully done, especially considering the space limitations inherent. I loved the snippets of description regarding Nicola's travels and the various scandals in which she found herself, and delighted in hearing about Thomas' studies, his dedication to his work, and his abiding need to repay the trust his family placed in him. Everything added up to a reading experiencing that was completely enthralling and heartwarming, leaving me as satisfied as if I had spent weeks with Nicola and Thomas.

Cassandra Dean is an author whose work I always enjoy, but this story was a special and an irresistible one that I wholeheartedly recommend!

4.0 out of 5 stars A Neatly Wrapped Little Package 19 July 2013
By Long Ago Love - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Silk and Scandal is a neatly wrapped little package of a novella. It is written concisely and to the point; the point being a romance between an orphan turned barrister and the daughter of an aristocrat.

Thomas Cartright, adopted from the poorhouse at age 9 by a wealthy couple who gave him financial and familial advantages in life, is now reacquainted with Lady Nicola Fitzgibbons, his childhood neighbor, now a lady of "scandal" via flirtations across the continents.

"Nic" has taken it upon herself to write about her travels (and travails) to Thomas and he, although vexed by her letters, reluctantly returns them. Their correspondence lasts for almost ten years as Nic hops one country to another, escaping scandal after scandal, whilst Thomas completes his law training.

Upon her return to England, Nicola's and Thomas' lives are rekindled, with Nicola looking for romance and Thomas more concerned about his law career. Through a series of mishaps and misunderstandings, buried feelings are unearthed; however quarrels and calamities abound, making the road for romance as jagged and sharp as an unpaved graveled path.

The characters appear to be typical in nature, with Nicola being flighty and dreamy and Thomas being on the stodgy side; however, when they are with each other, their guards are let down, revealing how very likable their characters are underneath all the crinoline and cravats, but not without an extraordinarily mortifying moment that puts Thomas' hard-earned career in dangerous peril.

Cassandra Dean has written a very amenable and enjoyable short story that allows the reader to escape into a brief, albeit, delectable 19th century liaison.

4.0 out of 5 stars Short, sweet and completely satisfying~ 27 May 2014
By Tin @ Love Saves the World - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition
Cassandra Dean's Silk series features a trio of aspiring barristers and the women In their lives. Silk & Scandal is the first book and features Thomas Cartwright and Lady Nicola Fitzgibbons, neighbors and childhood friends. Lady Nicola is the daughter of a diplomat and has live most of her life away from London. It is a surprise that she managed to find one friend: Thomas Cartwright, adopted by the Lord Harry and Lady Millicent at a young age.

Now he is studying to be a barrister and Nicola is away again, accompanying her father across the world. It is during this separation that Thomas sees how very disparate their circumstances are: she's the granddaughter of an Earl, and he is a nobody aspiring to be a somebody. She creates scandal wherever she goes and he wants to build a proper career in politics. They've exchanged letters all their lives, and have shared a wonderful friendship, but Thomas makes the painful decision to end their correspondences -- believing it would be best for the both of them.

I don't believe that Nicola intended to be scandalous. I think it's just part of her life tragedy, that, unwittingly, trouble finds her even when she isn't looking for it. She has done her best to live properly, but, I think, the primal need for companionship and friendship sometimes overpowers good sense. It's also very sad that, the one person she expects to understand and accept her has also rejected her.

Well, it appears I have done it again. The Scandalous Lady Nicola, that's what they whisper here of me, when they think my back is turned and I cannot hear.

But, Thomas, I ask you, can I help it if two gentlemen see fit to duel over me? You may be assured I did not lead them on, no more than any other girl here. Perhaps I danced with each more than was seemly, and I may have shown a little more affection than was wise, but they both should have known there was nothing in it. They, as I, saw fit to relieve the unmitigated boredom that is the British quarter in Hong Kong.
- Prologue

Now, Nicola is back and wants answers from Thomas. It's an emotional confrontation between two very good friends and I could really feel Nicola's anxiety over being rejected by Thomas: she really doesn't have anyone else in her life, and definitely not anyone who knows her as well as Thomas does. She's very focused on saving their friendship.

How was it she'd been gone and yet he could still read her? She was overly bright, because she worried about his response. She spoke quickly, because she couldn't bear it if he refused her. Bloody hell, eight years had passed. Eight. How could he still now her so well?
- Chapter 1

* * *

Clearly, he needed her help and, knowing Thomas, he would not ask. Making her way to his side of the desk, she stopped beside him. Without comment, he watched her, back still rigorously straight. Hesitantly, she lifted her hand and smoothed her fingers through his hair.

He flinched.

Instantly, she froze. She would not force him to accept her comfort, and she would not be the cause of any more distress.
- Chapter 3

I wanted to dislike Thomas for not understanding, for not being a better friend ... but, considering his background, I understand why Thomas continues to strive to better himself. Thomas believed Nicola would hold him back, but, in fact, Nicola has the opposite effect on Thomas's life and career.

This short story is a very nice study of the opposites-attract theme. At 5 chapters, this is short, sweet and completely satisfying. I also enjoyed reading the letters between Nicola and Thomas, and the letters seem to be a common theme in this series of short stories. (After I finished this book, I went and read Silk & Scorn , the second book in the series.)
