Product Description

Review
"large, colourful reference book... worthy of accolades... excellent, and at times breathtaking, photography... This book is a Silk Road 'bible', a well-constructed and beautiful collation of a mass of information and knowledge on a truly fascinating corner of the world...be warned: read the Silk Road and you'll want to experience it for yourself" -Geographical magazine (magazine of the Royal Geographical Society)

Product Description
Celebrating the cultural heritage of the countries along the Silk Route, this text explores the ancient trade route between Europe and the Far East, more specifically between Rome and the old Chinese capital of Xian. It examines the beautiful works of art discovered in each country, and sets them in their historical and geographical context. The author provides a comprehensive history of the Silk Road, drawing freely on anecdotes and literary and historical sources he examines the lives of the merchants and other travellers who used this route. Vignettes and poems from the heydey of the great trading route punctuate a lively and colourful text, which also features Antonia Tozer's evocative photographs.

5.0 out of 5 stars A beautiful book, 19 April 2004
By A Customer
This is a beautiful book, delightfully illustrated on virtually every page with stunning photographs from across the Silk Road.

As is shown in fascinating detail throughout the book, the Silk Road was not one road but thousands of trade routes stretching across may countries, from China, India, Afghanistan and through to the Mediteranean and beyond.

The book also includes a detailed descriptive account of the history and resources of the particular regions - again this is very well presented and well researched although inevitably the text takes a back seat alongside the brilliant photography.

Well worth the price and to be recommended, for historians, geographers, photographers, art lovers and travellers everywhere.

5.0 out of 5 stars silk road, 12 Nov 2007

This book is without doubt a labour of love by the author over a seven year period. The text, maps and pictures are excellent while the bibliograohy is comprehensive.Tradebetween China and the West covered the perid 100BC and 1500AD when the trade routes and cities were destroyed by Genghis Khan and Tamerlane.Trade was dormant until the middle of the 1800s with the "rediscovery of China but by that time trade was mainly by sea.The Silk road is not a single road but a myriad of routes from Xian to Rome with dozens of branches alonn the way to Malaya and Indonesia,India,Russia theMediterannean countries,Arabia and Yemen. Along theseroutes travelled people, ideas, religions aswell as trade tothe benefit of all which is excellently written and illustrated.

5.0 out of 5 stars Art and History to open your mind, 1 Jul 2008

This book was lent to me by a Chinese friend Mr Ng
Who said Bob you like hysterical books, maybe you will
find it worth a look.Well needless to say I did.
This book plots the old trade routes between East and the West.
Starting over two thousand years ago, giving me a fresh
insight to the vast amount and diverse range of commodities
that were traded.
I found this plotted history of the Silk and Spice trade
routes so absorbing.I also found the insertion of poetry
and prose, well placed thougth out the book,a nice touch.
The photography by Antonia Tozer
Being a keen photographer myself I can really appreciate
the high standard and skill that went into producing the
great photos.
This book to me is thought provoking, held my interest
from the preface to the words of Walt Whitmans Leaves of Grass.
Inconclusion this informative book by Jonathan Tucker is
not a hysterical book. But a true source of reference for
future generations.
Bob
