I've just finished reading this book and I still can't really say what it's about! It's easy to see how people could dislike this book, but in my opinion its great. It's one of the most unsettling, bizarre, terrifying books I've read in a long time. Kiernan has some beautifully crafted metaphors, but sometimes it's hard to tell whether what's happening is a metaphor or real. This can make it hard to read and it can get a bit tedious at times, but all in all it's a great book.

Definately a book that reads better if you can relate to the characters through experience. It's easy to see how these characters could be seen as uninteresting. However, theres a good plot in here if you can sympathise with the people it's woven around and their lifestyle. Not for everyone....but if you're into almost any form of 'underground' culture I'd give it a look.

I've gotten kind of jaded about books that have recommendations on the cover from other authors - they rarely ever deliver. Silk is a definite exception. I picked it up because I'd read some of Kiernan's short stories and liked them and although I was intrigued by quotes on the cover by Clive Barker, Neil Gaiman, and Peter Straub, it was standing in the bookstore reading the prologue that hooked me. Kiernan's prose is fabulous, her characters real. Silk is a very, very scary book (especially if you're afraid of spiders...), but it's also a thought-provoking look at subcultures and life in the modern South, as well (I used to live in Atlanta). You absolutely won't be disappointed by this book!

It's very rare that any item reviewed on Amazon gets less than four stars. Admittedly, most if not all these works deserve it, but with Kiernan's debut we have a genuine work of... Read more

Wow Caitlin is a true poet.
As a huge fan of Poppy z Brite it was inevitable that I would eventually read some of Caitlin's work, as this was her first full length I decided to start here. Wow! Read more

A Time and A Place
As a first novel 'Silk' obviously has it's share of flaws but as a work of fiction, as a readable novel it is better than most could acheive on their second, third, fourth.. Read more

What can I say? Brilliant. It made me cry...
Having been a long time fan of Poppy Z.Brite, I was eager to read this novel. I'd read the short story 'Escape Artist' by Kiernan in The Sandman:Book of Dreams collection, and... Read more

As poorly written as I could possibly have feared.
Well, the new "goth" author rears its ugly head. Thankfully, I didn't have to buy this awful book, as it was given as a review copy. Read more

I must admit I was very dispointed with this book.
I began this novel hoping to read something new and different. I am forced to admit that I gave up after 290 pages. I know, only 60 to go, but this novel is just dreadful. Read more

Filled with silly subculture, but writing is superb.
If you're into the "goth" subculture, then you should enjoy the setting these characters are set in. I personally am not into all that, so I found it a tad annoying. Read more
