Book Description

30 Aug 2007 Vicky Bliss

'One of Elizabeth Peters' best thrillers yet& and so funny you will laugh aloud' PW

One red rose, a one-way ticket to Stockholm, and a cryptic message in Latin intrigue Vicky Bliss - as they were precisely intended to do. Vicky recognises the handiwork of her former lover, jewel thief John Smythe, and she takes the bait, eagerly following Smythe's lead in the hope offinding a lost treasure. But the trail begins at a priceless fifth century chalice which will place Vicky at the mercy of a gang of ruthless criminals who have their eyes on an even more valuable prize. And the hunt threatens to turn deadly on a remote island, where a captive Vicky must dig deep at an excavation into the distant past.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Style - Poor Plot 9 Sep 2014
By DJF
Format:Paperback
This is my first trip into the books concerning Vicky Bliss though I have read other books by this author and enjoyed them very much. Unfortunately I didn't feel that this book lived up to the previous work I have read by this author.
Vicky Bliss is an American working in a German museum. She has a love/hate relationship with art conman and thief whom she has met in previous books in the series. I haven't read these books but that didn't make any difference to the reading of this one, it was easy to get up to speed. She receives a cryptic message & plane ticket from this man, John Smythe, and goes racing off to Sweden. What follows is a farcical chase for hidden treasure including a gang of notorious art thieves, a dubious policeman and an elderly swedish millionaire.
I very much enjoyed the style of writing in this book. Vicky Bliss is narrating the book with plenty of amusing asides & self-deprecating comments. This is light and fun to read and I very much enjoyed the way it was written.
The problem with this book was the plot. Any amount of great writing and characters will not carry a book along if the plot is flawed. This plot has more holes than a swiss cheese. Characters do quite inexplicable things and change personalities at a whim which did leave me floundering somewhat. The author skipped over events that required more complex detail leaving me wondering how some things had been acheived. Vicky and John Smythe spend quite some time on an island surrounded by armed men but seem to manage to do exactly what they want without a single bullet being fired. It was all rather cartoonish. The actual story was very weak and when I came to the end I realised that practically nothing had been achieved in the book.
Much as I enjoyed the style of this book, I shall not be hurrying to read any more in this series.

3.0 out of 5 stars good fun but not as good as the egyptian series 21 May 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
light, fun, good no effort required time filler. Characters not as compelling as the egyptian series but those are best in class for this light genre.
