“Masterful Storytelling”--The Guardian

Series Seven & Eight

4 Disc Set

"…a worthy farewell to Burton, who has delivered one of television's most compelling female characters."--Mail on Sunday

These series find Professor Sam Ryan continuing to lead the forensic pathology team until the discovery of her long-lost son impels her to move on. Then its up to Harry, Leo and a surprising new recruit, Nikki Alexander, to preserve her belief that every corpse deserves to have it’s story told.

Series 7:
Answering Fire - In a suspected terrorist attack on a London hotel a government minister is killed. As Sam and the team investigate the case, old friends and government officials soon muddy the water.
Fatal Error - When two brothers are found dead in a police cell, Sam and Leo find themselves on opposing sides of an Old Bailey court case – then a 13-year old murder resurfaces, questioning Sam’s findings…
Running on Empty - When a young woman falls to her death, the police believe she took her own life. When Sam, Leo and Harry are called in, their investigations soon unravel a tragic story.
Beyond Guilt - As Sam investigates a brutal murder, she is also asked to investigate a professor linked to the case and discovers the case is a lot more complicated than first appearances suggested.

Series 8:
A Time to Heal -The team is called out to Northern Ireland to investigate the bodies of two men killed by paramilitaries twenty years ago. For Sam, it is a case that is soon to turn personal…
Death by Water - Tensions are running high in the ‘leaderless’ team as Leo and Harry clash over an investigation into an outbreak of breathing difficulties among children on the South Coast.
Nowhere Fast - When members of a race horse owning syndicate are killed in a helicopter crash, Leo and Harry investigate – and an unexpected new face at the mortuary lends a helping hand.
Body 21 - Approached by a group of survivors from a recent train crash, the team investigate the wreckage and a new mystery – the identity of the unidentified body 21.

I had been waiting for this dvd to be released as a proper UK BBC release having already purchased Series 1, Series 2, Series 3&4 and Series 5&6. I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this dvd as the stories are very compelling.
Series 8 marks Amanda Burtons last episode (episode1), as the further episodes see Emilia Fox joining. This DVD was certainly worth the wait. I would recommend all Silent Witness fans to buy the UK BBC releases not the Dutch imports.
It's just a shame that the BBC doesn't get its act together quicker, as we have had to wait for about seven years for this to be released! The good news is however, that the BBC has, in the past few months, released Series 3&4, 5&6 and this one.
Therefore, I am hoping that it won't be too long before the BBC release the UK version of Series 9&10 and 11&12 as I am desperate to watch more. Good delivery and service by Amazon as ever.

Another wonderful addition to the Silent Witness collection. In this we see Sam Ryan (Amanda Burton) leave the team to be replaced by Nikki Alexander (Emilia Fox). Normally when a centre-piece of a long running series leaves the quality dips; not in this case. More excellent drama

Wow, sad to watch Prof Ryan stay in Ireland. Couldn't figure out how the writers could keep this show going without Amanda Burton....but they did a pretty great job with a bit of a tribute via Leo's nightmare and then quite an engrossing plot. Bravo! I've ordered the series without Sam Ryan although it's not the same it's still worth watching.

Over these two series, Silent Witness underwent a lot of changes, both in style and cast. The cinematography has also changed, with cooler colours and a move to more handheld camerawork.

Video quality: 3/5

The image presented here isn't great but could be worse. The best presented widescreen image the series has seen was the release of Series 5. Series 7 is correctly presented in a widescreen ratio, and colours are often good. The big problem is noise, and there is a lot of it. Digital noise (rather than film grain) is present almost constantly. It's a shame, as anyone who has seen Acorn Media's or Koch Media's Blu-ray releases of Prime Suspect would know that old TV episodes shot on 16mm can look stunning if treated correctly. Here, the episodes look like they are in a need for a good remastering. Series 8 is a tad better, but not much.

This series sees the end of Sam Ryan's career, and the beginning of a new line-up, which isn't at all bad either. Not for the faint-hearted the very realistic autopsies are quite fascinating, if you're that way inclined.

This series has always (to me at least) been a good balance between forensic and human stories. All the actors play their roles very well - long live Silent Witness.

I purchased this for my husband but I really enjoy this series also. We both love the detail that goes into finding out the cause of death and of course the fact that Sam (Amanda Burton)Always manages to handle the cops who always are more often than not quick to draw a conclusion about a death forgetting she is the expert in her field yet they still question her judgement at times. But she stands up to them and proves she is right and solves cases everytime for them. Great series to have.
