I love the Silent Traveller series, which was written by a Chinese man from the 1930s to the 1970s. His most famous book is probably "The Silent Traveller in London" which is a must-have as well. But a quick note on this edition of "The Silent Traveller in Oxford" by Interlink Press - it includes a nice new introduction to the work, but unfortunately the author's original watercolour paintings are not reproduced in colour as they were in the first editions. They are shown only in greyscale/B&W. If you don't mind that, then I would recommend purchasing this edition. But if you care about Chiang Yee's original vision, then you may want to try and find an out-of-print hardcover copy if you can.

A classic work of travel literature 20 July 2003
By Midwest Book Review - Published on
Format: Paperback
The Silent Traveler In Oxford is a classic work of travel literature. Written by Chiang Yee, a Chinese writer who took refuge in Oxford from the London Blitz in the year 1940, The Silent Traveler In Oxford brings a unique perspective that explores Oxford's scenery, traditions, pubs and restaurants, daily life, and so much more -- all with a keen eye for idiosyncracy. Highly enjoyable reading as a uniquely written travelogue, The Silent Traveler In Oxford is especially recommended for Anglophiles and others with an interest in Oxford during those yesteryears of World War II.
