Product Description

Mark Hartmann, a consultant pathologist, has problems. Married to a barrister, he ought to be living a comfortable life but his excessive gambling is starting to threaten his marriage. Then he has to perform an autopsy on Millicent Sweet, a 22-year-old laboratory assistant who has died of cancer. His findings are odd, for though so young she appears to have suffered from several different, aggressive cancers. But before he can discuss the case with colleagues he is called away to a conference in Scotland, where, drunk and depressed in the evening, he ends up sleeping with one of the sales reps. The consequence of this is blackmail by a pharmaceutical company who threaten to reveal all to Hartmann's wife - unless he falsifies his report on Millicent Sweet's death. And they are not the only people interested in Sweet. Her father, convinced his daughter's death is the result of a laboratory accident, has asked lawyer Helena Flemming to investigate further. Helena's partner, John Eisenmenger, is a forensic pathologist, who soon uncovers the results of Hartmann's original autopsy and subsequent deception...

A Brilliant writer 29 May 2010
Format:Paperback
I just love Keith McCarthy's writing, I actually listen to them on audiobook, and with the reading of Sean Barrett, they are the best.
He writes with a wonderful unafraid, forthrightness and humour, I just love his turn of phrase.
His stories are an absolute joy, earthy, believable, and satisfying.
He is fair and not so brainwashed by feminism and 'new manism' as most authors of the present day.
My kind of writer. And Sean Barrett's reading teams to make it absolutely compelling.

Great Mystery 27 May 2005
By A Customer
Format:Hardcover
This is another in a series of fine mysteries by Keith McCarthy. What is present in this and other of the author's novels is supreme intelligence, wry humor and snappy dialogue. You are always in the hands of a master who knows human nature and pathology in equal measure. The plot lines are fairly convincing and interesting but what sets his mysteries apart is the sharp, witty and inspiring external and internal dialogues. Also, the characters all ring true from stuffy academics to disillusioned police. The only possible improvements, to the extent thay are needed, are in the exposition of motives for the crime, i.e, how do nebbishes tranform themeselves into superhuman killers. What is the triggering mechanism, and also the love interests could be explained in greater depth. All the women that attract our hero are really keen, fit and A-line to the point of being mannequins of perfection. What about a pudgy, nice lady who is appealing for something other than her sexual gifts. But these are really only minor quibbles in what is a real tour de force for a mystery novel of real grace and intellectual power.

Keith McCarthy has done it again. I enjoyed "A Feast of Carrion", and I enjoyed "The Silent Sleep of the Dying" even more. The writing and plotting are brilliant. No need to say more, really, except to say that I wish the third book of the trilogy were already in the shops.
