Product Description

1963: When Larry Winters violently murders a Soho barman in cold blood he is sentenced to life imprisonment. Within ten years he is addicted to prescription drugs and feared as Scotland's most violent inmate. After being transferred to the experimental Barlinnie Special Unit, Winters finds new and creative ways to express himself, but continues to self-destructively explore drugs as a means to escape the confines of his prison cell.

Based on a true story, with exceptional performances from both Iain Glen and Robert Carlyle, this brutal, mind-bending journey into the damaged mind of a violent killer is as uncompromising as it is unforgettable.

Extra Features:

  • Remastered to High Definition from film elements held in the BFI National Archive
  • Includes informative film notes and HOH subtitles

4.0 out of 5 stars Silent scream 26 Oct 2012

I've been looking for this movie in dvd format for ages, so was very happy to finally come by one on amazon.
First of all, i wish they kept the same cover as originally it was on VHS.
Second. All Robert Carlyle fans will be misled thinking that this talented Scot is one of the movie stars. It still remains quite a mystery as to why his name on the cover at all. It probably one of his very first performances and his appearance could be summed up in 5 minutes, (he's one of the prison guards i think).

To make long story short it's a real life story of Larry Winters,(played by Iain Glen), a demented killer who ends up in Scotland's experimental prison,(more like a rehab of 70's),for extremely dangerous criminals.
What so special about Winters is that he was a murderer with extreme intelligence and talent for poetry.
His story told through flashbacks to the past, (his childhood and army years), his visit from prison to a family reunion, his poetry (which comes "alive" in a bit of a music video manner)and his hallucinations infused by prescription drugs which eventually became the cause of his death.

At times it was hard to follow what's real and what's made up by cloudy and drugged brain of Winter's. And i'm not quite sure whether the purpose of this story was to tell the reason's behind Winter's madness. Was it trying to justify his actions or make people "feel" for that man...

However, for those who are Iain Glen fans, it's a real gem. It's exclusively a one man performance. It was a real joy to see this great actor and the capacity of his talent.
