I have to confess I am a terrible person to review second books in series that I like. I find them hard to review because inevitably I am obsessed with the first and have been biting my nails in anticipation of the second for long enough that I am expecting to open the pages to the sound of angels singing and a blinding light of glory. So I waited for a couple of days to review this so that I would do a fair job.
This second book has the cast of Julia's family fleshed out further and various odd connections and relationships explored. There are romantic shenanigans, there are jewel thieves and ghosts and a body in the game larder. There are family disputes and conflict between Julia, Brisbane and his new fiancee.
I confess that in places I found the pace a little slow, a couple of the loose ends were tied up a little too neatly and I did find myself hoping that Julia would suddenly reveal she had solved an intrigue while in Italy... but these are criticisms from someone who unfairly expects perfection. I got a great kick out of the way the staff of the house remained valid characters (I really need a butler like Aquinas but I can do without a Morag), I really got a feel for the Abbey and loved it as a setting and I am now especially in love with Julia's father who is just *fabulous*. Oh yes, and I still want a pet raven. :)
I'll give this an 8/10 as a Bloody Good Read and I happily recommend this book to anyone who likes a quirky, character based mystery. I can't wait for the third book, which is I believe set in Yorkshire - which happens to be where I live... :) Deanna, I know you commented on my review of your first book so I am hoping you don't think I am a snark for my minor criticisms of your second - please keep writing these fabulous people into my life, you talented darlin', you!
