Book Description

16 Oct 2012

In just six days, Lady Jessica Stanton will turn twenty-five and inherit enough money to make her one of England’s wealthiest women. And when that happens, her stepbrother Colin will swoop in to take it all—along with her freedom. The only solution: find a husband strong enough to stand up to Colin. But even if she’s able to find someone able to protect her, what man will marry her once they discover her secret?

Not only is Simon Westland, Earl of Northcote, bankrupt, but the London gossip continues to speculate that he had a hand in the untimely death of his wastrel father. Now he is desperate to find a woman to keep him from losing everything. But what woman will want to marry a suspected murderer?

Thrown together by sheer necessity, Jessica and Simon agree that theirs will be a marriage of convenience. But no legal document can protect Jessica’s heart when she learns of Simon’s hidden motive for marrying her. For despite her best intentions, Jessica has fallen in love with her husband. And love is the last thing either of them wants—though it may be exactly what they both need.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Moment of Silence 29 Sep 2012
By Mrs. D. J. Smith TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Jessica is a girl with quite a few secrets. For one, nearly all of society doesn't realise that she's deaf, following a fever as a child. she can, of course, lip read, with some interesting results. Jessica lives a reasonably comfortable life, until she suddenly finds out that her father actually left her rather a large fortune and that the detestable step brother she thought was dead is actually alive and is coming back to England with the clear intention of having her locked in an asylum and taking her fortune for himself. She can run, but she can't hide and hindered by her hearing impairment, she's likely to be easy prey; the only thing that may be able to save her is an husband strong enough to stand up to her step brother..... enter Simon Westland, Earl of Northcote.

Simon's in a bit of a fix himself. His father and avaricious stepmother managed to pretty much spend his inheritance and he has almost nothing left. His father also died under rather suspicious circumstances and many still believe Simon to be the culprit. He's also set on revenge against Jessica's stepbrother....

A marriage of convenience to each other will save the remaining Northcote estates and protect Jessica from her stepbrother. Of course, that is just the beginning of the story....

Overall, and enjoyable well-written read with an element of danger, so not so much a 'fluffy' sort of story. A few things could have been a little better I thought: on his first entrance, simon is a social pariah, women faint etc. and there are whispers everywhere that he murdered his father. Next thing we see, he's almost totally accepted and everyone wants to be his friend.

4.0 out of 5 stars A likeable, readable romance 12 May 2013
By josie82 TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
In order to preserve her fortune and her freedom, Lady Jessica Stanton has just six days to find a husband. But who will marry her when they find out her secret?

Simon Westland, Earl of Northcote is a bankrupt social outcast still whispered to be responsible for the death of his father. He needs to find a rich wife, and soon, to keep him from losing everything.

Marrying each other was convenient, falling in love with each other is either a big problem - or the best thing that could ever happen to them.

--

I have only recently been introduced to Laura Landon novels and this one seems to fit the mould of the others I have read. It's fun, romantic and interesting but doesn't have the sparkle of some of the big names of historical romance.

In this book, Simon and Jessica are thrown together by necessity but soon find themselves tied together by feelings and ultimately love. With secrets on both sides, there's plenty of interest to keep the pace of this book moving along.

With that said, there were a few things that stopped this getting 5 stars. There were a few anachronisms and Americanisms dotted throughout the text which always jar and pull you from the story. There were also a couple of issues regarding Jessica's deafness as well as confusion over just how much of a social outcast Simon was - but these are minor things in what was, overall, an enjoyable read with likeable characters and plot. 4 stars.

3.0 out of 5 stars Silent Revenge 15 Jan 2013
By S. Day
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
An historical romance, 'Silent Revenge' is also a dramatic thriller. Whilst the language of some of the characters is often at odds with the era in which it is set, the writing style is easy to read and the plot moves along quickly enough to hold your attention. A great novel it is not but if you enjoy this genre, this story will while away a few hours.

4.0 out of 5 stars A benchmark for modern period romances 13 Jan 2013
By M. Bray VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
Jessica is forced to bargain with a penniless noble to save herself from her evil brothers plot to get his hands on her inheritance. Her brother knows her best kept secret, that she is deaf, and will use it to lock her away given the chance. Given her lack of faith in herself, can she persuade her new husband to care enough to stand up for her?

It's one of the better period romances I've read recently - the characters are complex enough with their on issues, and the villainous brother is menacing enough to give the story an edge. It lacks the whining, drawn out concern with being proper for the time, and in my opinion this is only a good thing.

4.0 out of 5 stars Different type of story 19 Oct 2013

Interesting to think how deaf people were considered by society in the past. I read this book very quickly so it must have held my attention

I truly enjoyed the character of our heroine, Jessica. I thought Ms. Landon developed her character very well and what a refreshing change of pace to include within her persona the "secret" which is unveiled rather early in the book but I won't give it away in my review.

I also enjoyed the build-up in the relationship between Simon and Jessica, however, from the time Simon's character was introduced in the book, he came across as "too" everything. He was too angry, too loud, too controlling, too bent on revenge. In fact, he was just too overpowering to the point, it contributed to the story seeming somehow contrived. Not enough subtlety - just overpowering in a way that didn't come across exactly right.

I almost gave up on the story - after all, I didn't pay any extra $$ for it as I got it through Kindle Unlimited - basically an unlimited lending type of library now offered by Amazon whereby you pay $9.99 per month and you are able to borrow a maximum of 10 books at a time on your Kindle. At any rate, I decided to stick with the story and it was worth it in the long run to see how the relationship developed between Simon and Jessica. He had been hurt in the past and was determined to never love again. He couldn't help himself though and further, the way he endeavored to protect Jessica because of her secret made all his overpowering ways come through in a good way.
