Review

"Silent People explores the intriguing privacy of other people's experience and reminds us that human experience is so intricately layered that it sometimes defies our normal ranges of perception." Dr Terri Apter, psychologist and writer "A haunting tale which echoes in the mind long after the book has been put down." Judie Newman, Fellow of the English Association

Product Description

Silent People is about the silent people who wander among us looking lost, as if they don't quite belong, but don't know how to leave; who 'struggle all their lives, to fit into a world... that feels entirely alien to them, if not downright hostile'. Hebe, who also struggles to fit in, feels drawn to the silent people and yet, 'I could hardly bear to watch them sometimes, knowing what I did about their plight...' She is haunted by memories of Silas, the 'wild dodder boy', who befriended her when she was a child in Dodder's Well. She lost touch with him a long time ago after a disastrous flood and is always watching the river in the hope of seeing him again. Now, returning to her childhood haunts, she finds his home is under threat. Hebe's story wanders the borders of fact and fantasy, of science and art, of sanity and madness, as she catches glimpses of the magic that draws the silent people back to their ancient roots.

4.0 out of 5 stars Are they real or are they fantasy-the Dodder people?, 10 July 2006

Genre: Fantasy/ Fiction

Title: Silent People: Hearing the Call of the Dodder

AUTHOR: Yvonne Jerrold

As a child, Hebe loved the forest and the forest creatures. Her childhood friend, the wild `dodder' boy was her constant companion. Although very different, they formed a close bond and wiled away the hours together. But fate intervened and Hebe left Dodder's Well and her wild and mysterious friend. Years later she returns and attempts to find him and regain that feeling of belonging that was always missing in her life.

A hidden race of people, the Dodders are born from seed and live close to nature all of their lives. They have no need for material things, egotistical successes or interaction with humans. Are they real or simply a product of a lonely child's imagination? Can Hebe ever really fit in? Is she perhaps one of the Dodder people herself? You will have to read Silent People for answers to these questions and find a fascinating world of imagination, fantasy and wonder. This book leaves the reader pondering many possibilities that lay beneath the conscious mind.

Author, Yvonne Jerrold was born in the US but educated in Dublin and Cambridge. She continues to live in England where she is planting a small woodland of native trees. A true lover of nature her knowledge of horticulture shines in this novel.

A lovely, easy read for a sunny afternoon. Reviewer: Shirley Roe, Allbooks Reviews.

5.0 out of 5 stars Unusual and thought-provoking, 25 April 2006
This review is from: Silent People: Hearing the Call of the Dodder (Paperback)
This is a wonderful read. An unusual and thought-provoking story is told in a clear and flowing style. The narrative is enhanced in many places by evocative passages of almost poetic quality. Thoroughly recommended.

3.0 out of 5 stars in a dodder light, 25 April 2006
This review is from: Silent People: Hearing the Call of the Dodder (Paperback)
Silent People has some really interesting ideas - plants as ancestors, a hidden species of human, what goes on in the minds of shy, silent awkward people, our relationship with nature. Parts of the book are very successful, especially the main character's flashback to her childhood relationship with the mysterious dodder boy. This part of the book was very lyrical and heartfelt. The book was oddly structured, and the bits dealing with mundane life were less successful. At its best, the book is reminiscent of Mythago Wood and its ilk; but other bits could have done with a sympathetic but firm editor. However, the ideas are really interesting, and don't let the fact that it is self-published put you off (it is not the same as vanity publishing apparently). Overall, the wistful tone and the genuinely original ideas make this book well worth a read. I'm still seeing things in a dodder light...
