1.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing - poor audio/video synchronisation 30 Nov 2011
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
When I decided to purchase this DVD, I saw another reviewer had mentioned the synchronisation issues but as that was in Nov. 2009 and no other mentions, I thought maybe that was a one off. Unfortunately there was the same issue on the DVD I received in Nov. 2011 and it did really spoil the viewing, so much so that I have returned the DVD and received a refund from Amazon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas!!! 26 Oct 2009
Christmas wouldn't be Christmas without the annual Mcgarrigle and Wainwright family concert, and last years spectacular filmed at New York's Knitting Factory is no exception. Yes it's indulgent, yes it's over the top, yes it's a bun fight for the mic, but yes it's BRILLIANT and I love it! I'm a massive fan of everything Rufus and his duet with Justin Bond, singing "Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas" is simply fab, but the biggest highlight was his performance of "Minuit Chretien". Simply magical! Other note worth performances were from Sloan Wainwright (she's Loudon Wainwright III sister and she has a sensational voice!)

3.0 out of 5 stars Music great but sync issues 30 Nov 2009
Just got this today, it's a very enjoyable listen but is completely spoiled by appalling synchronisation between the audio and video tracks. Frankly its all over the place, being reasonably in sync at times and about 2 seconds out of sync at others. At times it changes within the same song, coinciding with a change in the camera shot!!
I think my copy will be going back.
Has anyone else had the same problem?

A must have viewing of this amazing musical family, or just have it on in the background over Christmas time.

4.0 out of 5 stars interesting 18 Feb 2014

interesting to see everyone together, especially as a rather poignant tour. I wouldn't necessarily get it for the quality of the music

4.0 out of 5 stars Christmas treat 19 Nov 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This is a recording of a Christmas concert (24 Christmas themed songs) given in 2008 by the extended McGarrigle and Wainwright families who are folk singers and songwriters of French Canadian origin. It has several technical/presentational problems which meant I could not give it five stars. The worst of these is poor synchronisation of mouth and words of song but I did forget about this after the first couple of songs.I also found the physical positioning of the musicians on the small stage very awkward and amateur with singers constantly jostling for position though I suspect this may be due in part to competing egos! Having mentioned the bad points up front I can now say I loved the music and the sheer Christmas joie de vivre of this concert. The supporting band is excellent and you get the feeling that all these performers love and understand music without needing to be pompous about it. Sloan Wainwright, who I had never heard before, has a beautiful contralto voice and I felt the input by Lou Reed and Emmylou Harris enhanced the DVD. To sum up, I doubt if this is a DVD with much general appeal but if you like folk music - or perhaps just enjoy something different for Christmas with a bit of campness thrown in - you will enjoy this.
