This book proves that when Danielle makes the effort, she can produce an interesting and enjoyable book. She has written some turkeys in her time, but I can easily say that this is probably her best book. And I have read almost every one of her books. It covers a part of the 2nd World War of which I know very little, about the lives of Japanese people living in the US. What I like about this book, and what is refreshing, is that things don't automatically and conveniently work about for people, as they sometimes do in her other books. This is more realistic. Worth reading more than once.

This is the second book I have read by Danielle Steel. I read 'The Long Road Home' before reading this book. What I like about her books are that they are orginal and beautifully written to a high standard. This story is about a young woman - Hiroko who is caught in the middle. Her mother belives in traditions and wants to pass them on to her children whilst Hiroko's father wants to get the family familar with modern aspects of life. Hiroko sets off for California a place where she feels out of place. I won't tell you any more, just read it to find out. The characters were likeable and the detail was of everything that Hiroko experiences is great. A great read even for teenagers as it is so easy to understand.

Not a bad read 5 Aug 2007
By Mrs. A. M. Chadwick VINE™ VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
Danielle Steels novel is set in the early 1940's, her main character leaves Japan and moves to America, when war breaks due to the bombing of Pearl Harbour she's seen as an enemy in a foreign country.

Her novel portraits human tragedy, strength, divided loyalties and love. The novel also tells of the terrible human loss during a tragic historical events, as well as showing the courage that people had during this un certain time.

It's a completely different novel to any of her others, I found it slow and hard to get into but it was a decent read, but she has written far better.

Not one of my favourite novels and I was a little disappointed with it.
