Product Description

Not much could drag Jim Booker out of a peaceful, if lonely, retirement and back to late nights, crime scenes, and chases. Jim Booker is done with detective work and would just like to enjoy a cup of coffee on a sunny day. But when an old friend shows up with a case about an old flame, Booker can’t say no.

What starts as a missing persons case soon delivers more than he bargained for, and when Booker’s own past offers clues, it’s clear that no one else can solve this mystery. But there’s a catch: Booker was given six months to live eight months ago.

Author J.R. Rain shows us that when it seems there’s nothing left to live for, there’s also nothing left to lose. His characters will take a chance on danger, doubt, even an unlikely romance—as long as they get a cup of coffee first.

About the Author

J.R. Rain is the author of thirty-three mystery, supernatural, and romance novels and five short-story collections. He’s sold over one million books online. Moon Dance, his supernatural mystery, has been translated into four languages, with audio and film productions pending. The literary heir to Robert Parker, he writes novels featuring challenging characters, complicated relationships, and page-turning modernist prose. The gritty realism in his mystery novels comes courtesy of years working as a private eye. A So-Cal native, Rain relocated to an enigmatic and shadowy island outside Seattle.

2.0 out of 5 stars Just......lacking 9 Mar 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
Waited for this to become a Prime lenders book. Downloaded it, encouraged by the reviews. What a waste of this month's free book. Glad I didn't pay for it. The main character is dying of HIV with cancer complications. He is trying to solve a new murder that is linked to his Brother's identical murder. His side kick is a gay Nigerian called Numi, who wants to look after him. Booker is VERY WEAK, constantly fighting for his next breath, and needs loads of rest and arm support from Numi. Death is constantly round the corner. Yet! He can fall in love, and, within a few chapters, have sex with his appointed councillor, more than once! Confront the murderer, and embark on a fisticuffs fight and break the suspects nose. Both have guns, yet Booker is too weak to fire one from what we have been lead to believe. A bit far fetched, story line inconsistent, but felt sorry for the main characters situation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get the tissues ready 19 Jan 2014

This story was great. A dammed good detective once sought after and respected struggles with this his final case. The biggest case of his life.
Haunted by the murder of his younger brother many years before he struggles with personal relationships, never letting anyone get too close for too long. His mother blames him for his death , hell he blames himself. Then someone from his past re-enters his life and asks him to find his missing wife. Trouble is he instinctively knows she is dead causing him to re visit his past. He had loved and lost this woman to his one time friend, this was hurting him to the core. When her body is found in the same spot his brother was killed with a similar MO it makes him more determined to find the killer, there has to be a link and he is going find it!
Its a true race against time because Jim is dying and he desperately needs to find and stop this killer. One last case to solve. He is assisted by Numi a new companion whose help he so desperately needs yet resents. He has spent a life time refusing help and love but somehow along the way he gets and receives both and shockingly along the way he finds he can return it with all his heart. I was a sobbing wreck by the end of the book and cursed his bad luck myself. There are difficult issues raised in this story but the humour between Jim and Numi is palpable and lets the story flow. This author has me hooked.

It's the middle of the night and I couldn't sleep so decided to read some more of this excellent book that kept me guessing till almost the end. I worked out whodunnit at the same time Booker did and that's the way I like it. Had me crying at the end and I'm not sure I'll get back to sleep now but I really enjoyed this book as I'm sure you will too if you read it......

At times the story was a little far fetched as I have relatives that have died of cancer. And they would not have been able to do the things he did in the throes. Of his death. Read more
