Book Description

20 Dec 2009
A young man emerges from a car crash on a remote road in Boston. Although he walks away unscathed the crash has claimed an innocent life. Sixteen years later Melanie Yeats walks into a Garda station with her hands stained in blood. As she gradually reveals her story the detectives are left with more questions than answers. What is the connection between Melanie, her missing husband, the car crash in Boston and the death of a young woman? Is Melanie a murderer or a victim? Whose blood is on her hands? Where will her story lead them?

4.0 out of 5 stars A GREAT READ 3 Jun 2011
Format:Paperback
Well, this book was certainly one I found difficult to put down, with several layers of mystery and intrigue building quickly from the start, with many twists and turns along the way.
Mellanie, the main character is presented in a complex, mysterious way, and one is never sure right until the end, what is fact and what could be imagined.
Slowly the connections between a tragic car crash in Boston, and the life of a mentally ill woman in rural Ireland are built up into a great thriller, as well as an interesting character study.
The descriptions are rich and detailed, though not cumbersome, and add to the pleasure of this novel.
I would thoroughly recommend it. I bought it at full price, and don't regret a penny of that!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Why did I bother? 24 Aug 2010
Format:Paperback
Luckily I didn't pay much for this book, I bought it in a charity shop for 2 pounds - still too much.
What a bore! I cannot explain why I finished it, although I went through the book like a fast train, skipping pieces and speed reading The descriptions of the house are far too elaborate, there is no real tension-building, it is all too predictable.
I read that the author studied sociology and literature. Why hasn't she made more of the characters, they were all flat, meaningless people. And why didn't she make more of the language? The sentences are presented to us as facts, that's all. Sometimes in a book if the subject matter doesn't appeal to you so much, at least the beauty of the language can make up for that, but not here.
What readers is McCarthy aiming at? Trying to make easy money?
She could have written a short story out of it. But that, as we all know, takes real talent!
This was a complete waste of time.
