Book Description

29 Dec 2011 Kit Marlowe

Second in the thrilling new Kit Marlowe historical mystery series - November, 1583. Desperate not to let the Netherlands fall into the hands of Catholic Spain, the Queen's spymaster orders Cambridge scholar and novice spy Christopher Marlowe to go there to assist its beleaguered leader, William the Silent. However, travelling in disguise as part of a troupe of Egyptian players, Marlowe encounters trouble even before he leaves England. When the players make a detour to perform at the home of Dr John Dee, one of their tricks ends in tragedy - and an arrest for murder . . .

A very good read with the slight hint of humour which pervades all of Mr.Crow's work.A dark tale this which should encourage people research the truths of this period of history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Silent Court 7 May 2013

This is the second novel in the Kit Marlowe series. The first one, Dark Entry was really great, so I was keen to get into the second book in the series. It is now November 1583, and Kit has been called to assist Francis Walsingham, the Queen's spymaster, in keeping the Low Countries out of the hands of the Catholic Spanish. Marlowe is asked to make his way, un-noticed by anyone, to Holland to protect the Statdholder, William the Silent from death threats. Meanwhile, Marlowe's old friend Doctor Dee is also looking forward to visitors, and as Christmas draws near, his household prepares itself for the festive season. And in Holland, William the Silent faces more threats than even he could have imagined.

This is another great book in the series. What makes these books so wonderfully engaging is that they are not only thoroughly researched, but the parts that are fictional are woven so skilfully into the historical background (and foreground) that the reader is happy to take them as part of the overall story. There are no jarring seams where historical fact is brutally forced to meet with fiction that is anachronistic or `unreal'. The writing is engaging, the story is riveting, the characters are funny, sad, loving, brutal - all real and human and totally enthralling. Christopher Marlowe is a fully rounded character of many facets in these books, and his interaction with the world and the people around him are such that the reader can fully believe that this life was indeed his. It is easy to believe that the stories that we read here are the ones that helped make Marlowe the writer that he was, and was to become.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Stuff 5 Oct 2012

I have read many, many M J Trow books and can safely say that I have never been disappointed, and Silent Court continues that run. The second book in his series on Kit Marlowe, who is a fascinating creature - he's one of those people who are a 'shadow' in history - we all know his name, know he was a poet and a spy and he died in Deptford, but we don't know him, anything about him. And so Trow comes along and gives us a version of Kit - but a Kit who is still all hung with shadows and mystery. We'll never know him, I suspect, but for a little while, it's marvellous to be caught up in his world of Elizabethan spying and danger, and to meet the characters with whom he mingles - John Dee, recurring and welcome; and this time the 'Egyptians' who carry him with them for a little while. The language is what we expect from Trow - intelligent and witty, surprising a laugh where you least expect.

Great stuff, atmospheric and engaging. Thoroughly recommended to anybody.
