Product Description

From the author of Sunday Times bestsellers One Child and Ghost Girl comes a heartbreaking story of a boy trapped in silence and the teacher who rescued him.

When special education teacher Torey Hayden first met fifteen-year-old Kevin, he was barricaded under a table. Desperately afraid of the world around him, he hadn’t spoken a word in eight years. He was considered hopeless, incurable.

But Hayden refused to believe it, though she realised it might well take a miracle to break through the walls he had built around himself. With unwavering devotion and gentle, patient love, she set out to free him – and slowly uncovered a shocking violent history and a terrible secret that an unfeeling bureaucracy had simply filed away and forgotten.

Torey refused to give up on this tragic “lost case.” For a trapped and frightened boy desperately needed her help – and she knew in her heart she could not rest easy until she had rescued him from the darkness.

This is yet another great book by Torey Hayden. Here we are introduced to an extremely difficult 15 year old boy who when approached by anyone barricaded himself underneath a table and didn't speak to anyone he came into contact with. Hayden tells the story of her difficulty to uncover the root of Kevin's problems and the struggles that they both had to go through in order to establish the trust that they both needed to work with each other. Having being deemed as a bit of a hopeless case, the professionals did not know what to do with Kevin. After some time, Hayden does make a breakthrough with Kevin, but not without a lot of tremendous hard work and perseverance. As the story develops, we are taken on a journey through Kevin's problems all the way up to adulthood. This book is both captivating and heartfelt and makes and excellent read.

Harsh 25 Oct 2007
By Rebecca
Format:Hardcover
I feel that the first two reviews were a bit harsh as neither of them has reviewed the actual content of the book, they are merely reviewing the false packaging.

I have never read Murphy's boy, however I realised that this was just a republication of the same book, as have been a few others of Hayden's novels.

Anyway, the story is moving and though in my opinion not as griping as some of her other ones, it is still a heart wrenching emotional read. I always look forward to reading Hayden's work and I feel the Silent Boy is definitely a must read for any hard core Torey Hayden fan, as well as new readers.
