5.0 out of 5 stars Superb film that highlights a disturbing issue. 21 Mar 2011

This was a very informative film, showing, in graphic detail, the trauma that children have to face when forced into a war situation. Loosely based on the Ugandan Lord's Resistance Army, the film shows how a young boy, Abu, is captured by the rebels and made to participate in the massacre of innocents. His best friends father, a white Dutch chef, ventures into the bush to locate Abu, to reunite him with his own son. I was really moved by this film and the believable moral quandries these children have to face, despite not being fully developed physically and mentally. All in all I heartily recommend this worthy and well made movie.

4.0 out of 5 stars "You can call me Daddy" 16 Jun 2011
By Tommy D TOP 100 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
The Silent Army is a recut version of the original Dutch film called `Wit Licht' (White Light). Most of the Dutch scenes were cut and the ending was changed to suit an art house International audience. I would have like to have seen the original. This has been a labour of love for Dutch `pop idol' Marco Borsato, he has been involved with War Child for over ten years. He plays Eduard a Dutch Restaurateur in some unindentified African country.

His son Tomas has a best friend in Abu, who he shares everything with and has grown increasingly attached since the death of his mother. There is a civil war going on after a coup d'état which ousted the previous Government. Part of the insurgent strategy is to capture and train children to become `child soldiers'.

Abu's village is attacked; he is forced to take part in the atrocities and is taken off to do more of the same. Tomas is heartbroken and keeps on until his father decides to do something about it. Eduard then sets off to find and rescue Abu. On his way he enlists the help of people trying to rehabilitate such children and uses this as a vehicle to tell more of their stories. Everything in the film is based on actual stories that rescued children have told, it was filmed in Uganda and South Africa, but is meant to be an indictment on the whole practice of procuring children to commit murder. They were actually attacked whilst filmimg at one point.

The intentions are laudable, but as a film there are some issues with plot holes, and the ending seemed far to speeded up. I have since discovered this is due to the recut version. Director Jean Van der Velde has done a good job as director and all of the performances are good to excellent. It is in Dutch, English, French and Swahili with very good sub titles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspired by the true stories of KONY 11 April 2012
Format:DVD
Inspired by the true stories of KONY in Uganda, this film shows the evil that can be done to innocent kids; and the power and strength of children. It's more or less an adventure story based on harsh reality. The kids and the rebel leader give stunning performances. Shot on locations in Uganda where the real Kony has acted out his madness.
