4.0 out of 5 stars Let this album do the talking, 17 May 2008
By J. D. Naylor "jazzfan" (England) - See all my reviews
(TOP 500 REVIEWER)    (REAL NAME)
Another superb album form the world music influenced guitarist Nicolas Meier. He's still basing his music around the same middle eastern and world music influences but this album, with Atzmon bringing the alto sax into play unlike the previous albums, gives the group a different sound and feel here."Dance of the rain" and "October in Ankara" are the pick of the tracks with the great Gilad blowing up an absoloute storm. On each solo he gently takes hold of the melody and builds and builds until he reaches it's peak in a torrent of improvised sound that will leave you breathless (and him as well if youv'e seen him live ! ).Meier himself is a guitarist of the highest order and adopts the typical asian and middle estern style of improvastion by working in rhythmic cycles rather than conventional chord changes.Sure he does show off a little with some finger blurringly fast riffs and phrases but essentially he is a lyrical and logical player to engage the mind and the ear.The rhythm section deserve a mention with the always underrated Asaf Sirkis in fine form on the drums.
All in all a great world/jazz crossover album from a group of highly accomplished muscians. If you like jazz over and beyond the be-bop formula then i think you'll like this.

4.0 out of 5 stars Atmospheric world-jazz masterpiece, 13 May 2008
By Mr. R. W. Garratt - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Every composition on the album is a Mahavishnu-inspired metaphysical journey through the corners of the globe; different landscapes, sensations, textures and emotions.

Meier approaches his nylon-string guitar like a beast he wants to tame. Aggressive but full of love, he attacks it with forceful pyrotechnic runs; equal parts McLaughlin-inspired fusion, De Lucia-inspired flamenco and ethnic modes learnt from his Turkish wife's homeland. The virtuoso also uses fretless 6 and 11-string guitars, a three string-Turkish instrument known as a Shaz, and a somewhat out-of-place Fender Stratocaster.

Taking a break from his Orient House Ensemble, sax and clarinet legend Gilad Atzmon joins Meier in the front line. His solos mark the climax of every piece; Coltranes of sound spew out as he finds a theme, builds it up, down, round, contorts it in all directions.

"Silence Talks" succeeds in drawing on both the stylistic and conceptual facets of ethnic music in an exciting an accessible way. Meier manages the feat of being both technically gifted and audibly enticing, with geeky guitar explorations and complicated compositions rarely sounding this engaging or soulful.
