4.0 out of 5 stars A fascinating dissection of a tragedy., 20 July 2009
This review is from: The Silence and the Scorpion: The Coup Against Chavez and the Making of Modern Venezuela (Hardcover)
I bought this book because I was living in Caracas when it all happened and was astonished at the apparent lack of any meaningful investigation after the shooting stopped.

Mr Nelson has interviewed an impressive number of the main players involved as well as demonstrators from both sides. He explains clearly who the main players were and what positions they held in the government and/or military.

Dealing with such an emotive subject even-handedly and being accepted as impartial by readers of all persuasions is a tall order.

Mr Nelson does pretty well, although his style of writing everything in the present tense takes a bit of getting used to. His claims to impartiality may not persuade everyone, but he does try to put across the views of both Chavistas and Escuálidos, although not necessarily with the same number of column inches.

His viewpoint essentially seems to be one of sadness that a movement that promised so much should have come to this, but then most Venezuelans, of any political persuasion, would probably agree with that much.

A fascinating read for anyone who wants some light shed on three very dark days.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read!, 18 Sep 2011
This review is from: The Silence and the Scorpion: The Coup Against Chavez and the Making of Modern Venezuela (Hardcover)
If you're interested in the modern history of Venezuela, with an objective point of view, this book is essential.
I really appreciate the work of Brian Nelson, because he makes easy to understand (and to read also...) a very complex episode of modern venezuelan history, without the usual racial and political prejudices.
This is investigative journalism, fair and detailed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very insightful, 25 Jan 2011
By
This review is from: The Silence and the Scorpion: The Coup Against Chavez and the Making of Modern Venezuela (Hardcover)
As someone who lived the actual episode, finding out about the "behind the scenes" you presumed but were not sure about is both sad and satisfying.
Interesting material for the appropriate consumer.
