Product Description

Product Description
Many churches now have child protection policies, and yet, despite growing awareness, there is still a great need for greater understanding of abuse of all kinds. An essential read for all those who have experienced abuse themselves, pastors and youth workers, this guide explains the effect of all kinds of abuse on the victim, abusers and the wider community. It goes on to give guidelines for good leadership and pastoral care to prevent abuse and to support survivors. Separate chapters deal with working with offenders.

About the Author
Jane Chevous is the project director of Just42, a Christian charity working with children and young people in rural Suffolk. She is qualified in youth and social work and has over twenty-five years experience in the field - including both local authority and church youth officer posts and a spell as the assistant course director for the Centre for Youth Ministry at Ridley Hall, Cambridge, where she still tutors part-time. She has fostered abused teenagers and is a survivor of sexual, physical and pastoral abuse as a young person and an adult. She is a founding member of S:Vox: Survivors' Voices, a new organisation offering self-help and support, advocacy, training and education for survivors and their supporters.

5.0 out of 5 stars Uncomfortable Brilliance, 21 Dec 2006
By pinkwellies (Suffolk, UK) - See all my reviews
This is the best book on abuse you will ever read. Fact.

It makes for jolly difficult reading at times, and i have to admit it has taken me months to finish, as it is just too near the knuckle in places. As a survivor myself, i am often critical of books by people who claim to be experts when they have no personal experience. Jane Chevous' experience and clarity of communication speak for themselves.

The author never opts for the easy way out, or neat theological answers. She reflects well on a messy faith and a God who is big enough to deal with doubt, fear, pain, and the dark side of the human soul. Jane gives God a lot of good press.

If you are a survior, this book will undoubtedly touch you but also challenge you and the attitudes you hold. If you are in a community, whether faith based or not, you will benefit from reading this and learning how to protect and defend the vulnerable if the worst should happen. You will learn how the broken can rise up to be the most powerful members of society. It doesn't stop with 'survivor', but moves to 'thriving thank you very much!'.

A uncomfortably brilliant book from a wonderful woman who deserves far more praise than she thinks!!!!!
