Product Description

'Many of the world's religions believe there is one simple path that leads us towards God' says Benedictine monk, Christopher Jamison, 'It's called silence'. This three hour programme was first aired on BBC2 and is now available on a double DVD set. Father Christopher is convinced that everyone can benefit from sustained, regular periods of silence. Clare, David, Helen, Jon and Trish have typical high pressured jobs full of modern day noise(txt, e mail, mobile, multi media, conference calling, internet and so on). In these engrossing films these volunteers are immersed in a week of complete silence and we see how they learn to live out a monastic existence. They may aspire to be spiritual but do they want to be religious? And, after their retreat is over, will they return to their old ways or have they learned valuable, new lessons which profoundly change their lives going forward?

So good I went there! 26 Oct 2011
By Melon
It was not by chance that I was able to catch this show on BBC2 when it came out. Fast forward few months I found myself walking those same corridors and paths in St Beuno's and enjoying the inner silence.

Indeed I found that 'Silence is the gateway to the soul, and the soul is the gateway to God.' So much so that I am going again and plan to go on a Silent Retreat every year.

A thought provoking documentary; you'll either love it, or hate it.

I caught the final episode of this on the BBC and it made such an impression that I wanted to watch the whole series. I am very glad that I did - the 3 documentaries in the series take you on a journey with 5 very different participants but I could identify or relate to each of them in some way.

They give an open and honest account of their struggle to find and accept silence in their lives and it is fascinating to watch as they receive guidance from their mentors. Their individual journeys make compelling viewing as they all make significant realisations and changes. There is also the additional insight of the monk who is responsible for helping them find silence - his counsel is a rare combination of spiritual advice, philosophy and an understanding of the real world.

Having watched this I have made some changes to the way I approach my home life.

the big silence, made me stop and think of three other words, that are linked to it,they are solitude, simplicity and stillness,i learnt a mantra from the late Fr John Main,in Montreal,Canada in 1986,when i was there, ifound the big silence, surported my daily practise of twenty mins twice,as i live with bipolar, this has helped me have awellbeing and whole person care to my self and others,as a retired minister,i find the big silence, keeps me grounded, and i enjoy the present moment, shalom
