Biography

Now in their 14th year the Dropkick Murphys have risen from their basic Irish-punk roots to become a rocking & rolling, raging, green-clover machine. Dropkick Murphys are now one of the best-known rock bands in the world, thanks in part to their ability to tap into the working-class and sports fan culture that permeates Boston and the New England area but even more so due to their ... BBC Review

After starting life in the early 90s as a gnashing hardcore band fond of a nod to their Gaelic roots, Dropkick Murphys have gradually added and interlaced something more folky, ambitious and musically dexterous to their sound.

For their troubles, they’ve grown in popularity but have had to endure the digs of punk fans unable to see past the green football scarves on their merch table. Maybe some people just hate bagpipes and loud guitars in the same song. That their influence can be heard in rising newcomers such as Crowns means their sound has officially become more than just a quirky hybrid, though.

Predictably but not to its detriment, Signed and Sealed in Blood delivers a mix of rousing rock songs and enough jigs and whistles to get a singsong going at one of their famous St Patrick’s Day shows. There are also some nice surprises that compensate for the occasional swing and miss.

The Season’s Upon Us arrives a month late but is a funny addition to the alternative Christmas song canon. “My sisters are wackjobs, I wish I had none / Their husbands are losers and so are their sons,” begins a hellish description of being home for the holidays to which more than a few people can relate. Out of Our Heads is fine burst of unexpected, blue-collar rock, perhaps the recessive gene of Bruce Springsteen stopping by for a guest spot on their last album, 2011’s Going Out in Style.

The two tracks bookending things are perhaps the weakest. The Boys Are Back revs things up only to spin its wheels, while droopy closing ballad End of the Night sounds like it’s wandered off on its own after one too many. In contrast, Prisoner’s Song borrows some of the irresistible swagger of I'm Shipping Up to Boston (immortalised by The Departed’s soundtrack), and Rose Tattoo bleeds with florid emotion.

More of the same isn’t a bad prescription for banishing any New Year blues when what’s being served up is something as boisterous and cheery as this.

Received this today but it's already a great sounding album. The Irish roots of the music really come across in the earlier songs. I'm sure a lot of the material would be amazing live, they have that vibe that would go down well in a venue and a decent sized crowd. I love the greater use of 'alternative' instruments that they've had in other songs before. What more can I say, It's another great album from the band.

I was really looking forward to this album after hearing the track 'Rose Tattoo' it seemed like it would be another excellent album from the lads. However after listening to it a few times i've found that the only two memorable tracks on the album are the ones that have been released as singles, the others are somewhat mediocre in comparison to songs from previous albums.
The album is good but it most definitely is not great

4/5 maybe generous as this album is hit and miss and not as strong as even more recent efforts are. There's a few standout tracks and enough to keep most fans happy, a few interesting different musical directions and a feckin awful Xmas song that should have been an EP at best! Overall worth buying just for the best bits. P.S saw them live Newcastle, AWESOME!

I only recently got into these guys as they are a favourite of my brother's and they were playing in Bristol. It's a thoroughly enjoyable record with well judged pacing and solid anthems, particularly Rose Tattoo, My Hero and Out On The Town. These songs showcase the band range, varying from a big folky sing-a-long, a punk rock dash and an old fashioned rock and roll number. All the other songs are good, including Christmas song The Season's Upon Us, and only one song (Prisoner's Song) feels like it is making up the numbers. However, if you are new the band like me, I recommend that you start with Live on Lansdowne as this is a really good live record containing all of the bands best songs.

I thought their last album was a bit mediocre, but this put's them back on top of their game. The Album kicks off wth "The boys are back" which will probably be the opening anthem on stage from now onwards. The single "Rose Tattoo" is one of their best ever. It's a great album for driving in the car.
