Product Description

Review

"Every now and again, a book comes my way on a topic that is utterly and completely unexpected. Faythe Levine and Sam Macon's Sign Painters is the sort of artistic celebration that should be commonplace on the shelves.this is graphic design at its best; these signs command attention, enliven the landscape, and bring customers in... good stuff, and damned inspiring." -- Bookslut

About the Author

Since graduating from High School Faythe Levine hasn t stopped working on project after project. Her interest in outsider communities, artists and the stories and people whom often get overlooked have propelled her to travel extensively. The constant in Faythe s 20 years of creative work is her dedication to documenting her day to day life and travels through photographs and correspondence (once handwritten letters, now more commonly through social networking sites). This dedication has allowed her creative community to have an international reach full of a variety of both famous and infamous people of all types. Sam Macon is a filmmaker. He directs television commercials, music videos, short form documentaries and Web based video content through production company Radar Studios. He also helms commercial projects in Paris through Cosa Productions and in Moscow with Bazaleves Films. He is currently working on the feature length documentary Sign Painters. In addition to directing, Sam has taught video production at the Chicago Portfolio School and has been a guest lecturer at DePaul University and Syracuse University.

A book full of inspiring characters and tales. Filled with beautiful examples of the painters work, it is a book I will be continually referring back to. Each artist has their own history and path.
Looking forward to the movie that's coming out too.

This is a good book for anybody interested in sign painting or sign writing as we call it in the UK. The book has interesting interviews with old school as well as recent sign painters across America. It reminds us that before the 1980's all signs across the planet were painted by hand. When the transfer between hand painted signs to computer happened many sign painters and artists rightly thought it was a great shame, newer people to the planet don't know any different. Many old school sign painters that have passed on were similar to old school artists of my own trade tattooing, they both had reputations for liking a drink and they both had reputations for being grumpy it went with the territory and back in the day sometimes the two trades overlapped. The book reminds us of simpler times when if you were sign trained you could get work anywhere in the world and could drift from town to town with just a small box of brushes and paints picking up work if you wished. It also reminds us that then as well as today sign makers have a huge responsibility as do architects what our towns and landscapes will look like. Some forward thinking businesses of today are recognizing that hand painted signs stand out more and are more aesthetically pleasing than bland computer cut signs enabling hand painted signs to enjoy a steady comeback.

Christmas present given after viewing a documentary film featuring American sign writers. This craft is still flourishing in the USA in spite of computer generated vinyl lettering.
