Reviews

Variously described by critics as "Riveting", "Stunning", "Exciting..Stylish and Slick", & "An Ingenious Thriller" this is a little gem of a thriller, directed by actress turned director Kasi Lemmons, & starring the always superb, Samuel L. Jackson (Snakes On A Plane, Pulp Fiction ) as Romulus Ledbetter, a once devoted family man, now living rough on the streets os Manhattan. His home is a cave in the park and when he finds a frozen corpse outside the entrance one day he becomes determined to find out how the man died and prove he was murdered . To do this he has to re-enter the world he is no longer a part of, and most importantly confront his own inner demons. Very overlooked on it's original release it's a clever involving film, with Jackson totally believable as always.

5.0 out of 5 stars off the main radar but brilliant 28 July 2008
By M. Nix
Format:DVD
I bough this DVD for £1 at Woolworths, and it was a pound very well spent. I cannot believe that this film is so little known or did not get a major theatrical release in the UK. This has to be one of Samuel L Jackson's finest performances as the delusional cave dwelling hermit who unravels a murder mystery that no one else seems interested in. Jackson is in superb form in his performance of a man wrestling with his own demons and trying to hang on to the fringes of his sanity, when a dead body turns up frozen in a treee outside his cave in the park. The police just see it as another homeless victim of the weather, but a lead from the lover of the dead man, starts a chain of events which lead to the upper echelons of the art establishment and a world of torture and deceit. I can highly recommend this film, for its taut plot, tension, and a stellar performance form Jackson.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Overlooked Gem 13 Mar 2009
By RDWHITE
Format:DVD
This film is a wonder. It's not one of the best films ever made, but it's interesting, effective, with a particularly engaging plot and seems to me at least to be unique. Lord knows how this film has been overlooked by all reviewers and critics. Jackson's performance is terrific, perhaps the finest he has ever given, as a tormented psychotic tramp who is also a musical genius on a vendetta to find the killer of a young man found frozen to death outside of his makeshift home. In general its great viewing, I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoys mystery thrillers or unique pieces of cinema.

1.0 out of 5 stars Uncomprehensible 6 Oct 2010
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
What a load of rambling tosh, difficult to follow, difficult to engage with the characters, was glad when it finished. Could have turned it off but it hoped it would get better but it did not. I was very disappointed as Jackson usually is credited with good films.
