great climax 5 Dec 2011

The Sign of the Book is the 4th book in the Cliff Janeway series by John Dunning. Cliff agrees to help Erin determine if her estranged childhood friend, Laura Marshall, really killed her husband, or confessed to protect her troubled son. The tempter for Cliff is the opportunity to do a little police-type work, but the bonus comes in examining the dead man's book collection. Another excellent Dunning novel filled with booky tidbits about signed copies and what makes a rare book valuable, about book fairs and book sales, and which also touches on autism. As always, realistic characters and dialogue, and this time a completely unexpected plot twist and a heart-stopping climax. Readers will look forward to the (so far) last of the series, The Bookwoman's Last Fling.

The fourth book in the Cliff Janeway "bookman" series from John Dunning, and they are still running strong. I can't recommend them enough for all book people - collector's, dealers, and anyone interested in the incredible prices books sometimes fetch at auction! - my word of warning, don't take them too seriously!

This series is to be read and enjoyed for what they are - a detective crime series with quite a lot of a "bookish" twist. John Dunning (a bookseller himself for many years) writes superbly and draws you straight into the plot - you might find yourself running to keep up!

In "The Sign of the Book", Cliff finds he just can't resist his girlfriend's (hot-shot lawyer, Erin) request for him to go and check out the books (and the murder scene) of her ex-best-friend's late husband, and Erin's ex-boyfriend. Erin's estranged childhood friend has been accused of the murder and Erin's not too sure if she wants to get involved. The twist to the tale lies in the intricacy of telling genuine signed books from the fakes... and it's good to see that Cliff's human after all in this book - he doesn't always get it right...

Start with book one, "Booked to Die"; then "The Bookman's Wake" & "The Bookman's Promise". You won't regret it.

Unfinished Business 12 Jun 2007

The Sign of the Book will probably appeal more to new readers of this series than to those who have been reading all of the Cliff Janeway novels. Why? The Sign of the Book is weaker than the other books in the series but does have a tincture of the book world that will appeal to those who haven't read one before.

What's different? The book connection is modest . . . and overdeveloped from the modest base. Also, much of the book's action serves little purpose. Basically, this is a novella stretched into a novel. The stretching dilutes what could have been a taut, but shorter, story.

Here's the background, Cliff's partner and lover, Erin D'Angelo, gets a call from an old friend asking for legal help. Erin hasn't forgiven Laura Marshall for stealing Erin's old boyfriend and marrying him. Erin is also tied up in court so the most she can and will do is send Cliff to check matters out with local counsel.

Cliff quickly spots that Laura is being railroaded by an incompetent deputy. She's also holding something back. But what does all that mean in the context of her confession to murdering her husband?

With Laura locked up and not remembering much, Cliff decides he'll have to check matters out on his own. Before long, he's stirring up hornet's nest after hornet's nest of opposition. Two long stakeouts start to open up the case. From there, it's a waiting game as the puzzle is slowly put together.

Even if you are a Cliff Janeway fan, you could skip this book.
