Product Description

Synopsis
Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay (WFRP or WHFRP) is a roleplaying system created by Games Workshop. It is set in the Old World, which bears some resemblance to late medieval / renaissance Europe. The world is threatened by the forces of Chaos. The major power in the Old World is the Empire, in which most of the adventures are located. The Empire itself is a country full of intrigue, conspiracies, and dark plots.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but no useful maps, 28 Jun 2006
Anthony Ragan is a familiar name to veteran WFRPers, having written the excellent Marienburg sourcebook under Hogshead Publishing. He certainly doesn't let us down here.
The book begins with the history of the Empire and an outline of the cults and races within it. This is all fine, though the observant will notice that history has changed much since the Warhammer 1st Edition. Now there are many more battles and obvious foes - an unfortunate progression, due to the influence of WFB on the game background. Still, experienced GMs can scrap the parts they don't like, as ever.
The bulk of the book describes each province in some detail, with a useful gazeteer. Alas, no decent maps are included - an ongoing bane of 2nd Edition products.
The booklet is rounded off with a decent little scenario based around Bogenhafen, with a nod towards those players who remember the old Enemy Within campaign.
Overall it's very good - far better than the Bretonnia sourcebook. If only it was a little meatier, with some maps...

4.0 out of 5 stars Rather good, 7 Jan 2008

What we have here is a decent book detailing the Empire and it's cults, as well as it's history. It's a little bit sparse in area's, especially on settlement details and maps, but if WFRP follows it's current trend it will do this in additional adventures/campaign supplements in the future (such as Terror in Talabheim).

It's a good collection of material altogether and is a good starting point for those running a campaign in the Empire. However, should you want more detail on the things covered in this book then I would suggest other sourcebooks such as the 'Tome of Salvation' for priests and religions and the various other adventure supplements such as 'Spires of Altdorf' and 'Terror in Talabheim' etc. for settlement details.

A good sourcebook overall ****

4.0 out of 5 stars Challenge: Caviar, 3 April 2009
By Robert Bailey (West Dorset, Uk) - See all my reviews
Hard work is an unavoidable part of good Games Mastering. A clever GM knows the value of study. Likewise a patient GM recognises the importance of writing down everything their immagination can come up with, in order that the most rewarding gaming sessions be more likely to happen.
This is where Sigmar's Heirs does so well - not in saving the GM any time, but in encouraging them to put in the work.
The main body of this book is a description of each of the large provinces that make up the Empire. In these detailed descriptions you will find literally tons of plot seeds, not including the familiar "Adventure Seeds" already there. I found this massive supply of ideas uplifting - I'll never be caught short if I need to rustle up a campaign from scratch again.

Just how inspiring you find the generous array of plots and socio-political machinations of the religious Old Worlders depends partly on your determination to flesh out these ideas.
You might well find the book is a little "dry" at times, that is to say: being something of a constant student I'd have prefered reading more about how to implement these ideas - it feels as though I am being asked an awful lot as GM by this book. That may be a trap you can avoid feeling thrown into, in the same way that you might or might not avoid losing a battle of wills with a daemon.

Having made it clear that this book is no push over - particularly compared with the Old World Bestiary where everything is handed to you on a silver platter of mutated caviar - I really enjoyed Sigmar's Heirs. There are more than enough amusing stories (some of them enticingly between the lines), and they've tacked an intelligent adventure on the end involving thievery, political scandal and cut-throat competition among the wealthy Guildmasters of everyone's favourite Old World Town - Bogenhafen.

Well worth a read if you like a challenge.

3.0 out of 5 stars useful
Quite a useful book, mainly for the GM, for players it is not quite as useful. Personally I'd rate the Bretonnian book much higher, and if given a choice would recommend you... Read more
