Interesting to see the variation in opinions about this lens. Makes me wonder if there are duds out there that simply need changing... Anyway, mine is no dud and I love it. Slight vignetting at shortest focal length, but nothing that cannot be corrected in photo-whizz-bang software. This is a solid performer that is strongly built, silent and quick in operation, wonderfully smooth auto-focus and easily acquired manual focus (I tend to use live view on my camera for close-up manual focus). Just a great 'walk-about' lens that makes me smile when I use it. OS is effective and is particularly noticeable when pushing ISO and shutter speed to get the Depth of Field that I want. I find the results pleasantly sharp, edge to edge - just that smidge of vignetting and then only wide open against a piercingly blue sky. The macro setting is not, being 1:2.7 rather than 1:1 (is that the right way around?) - anyway, despite that I am delighted with its ability to focus close-up well inside its published limit of 9cms. It isn't the least expensive lens, but when you consider what it will do from wide to portrait to close-up, landscape to interiors - it does everything except perhaps candid distant wildlife. Great lens for the price - and in my limited experience - for more than this price by a long way.
